KNUJ holds 62nd Annual Player of the Year Event

NEW ULM — KNUJ announced their 2023-2024 Winter Athletes of the Year on Tuesday at the 62nd Annual Player of the Year Event, selecting three athletes from 44 nominees.

St. Peter’s Rhyan Holmgren was selected as the KNUJ Girls Basketball Player of the Year. Holmgren was selected for her play in the Class AAA State Tournament, along with averaging 21.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.

Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Area’s Nick Slater was named the Wrestler of the Year. Slater helped take LCWMA to the team state tournament, along with finishing second at the individual state tournament at 189 pounds. Slater finished the season 47-6.

New Ulm’s Colton Benson took home his second KNUJ Boys Basketball Player of the Year award. Benson averaged 27.5 points, 6.7 rebounds as 2.7 assists for the Eagles this year and finished his career with 2,207 points.

KNUJ also celebrated five state tournament teams during the event, honoring the New Ulm boys hockey team, the LCWMA wrestling team, the Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart girls basketball team, the St. Peter girls basketball team and the Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey boys basketball team.

KNUJ will host its next banquet Nov. 12.
