NEW ULM — Despite the New Ulm Eagles turning in a season-high score, Luverne did just enough at the New Ulm Recreation Center on Monday to hold on for a 134.875-133.1 win in a Big South Conference gymnastics meet.

The Eagles once again got a solid showing from Josie Sellner, who finished second in all-around with a 34.075, but the Cardinals capitalized on the vault and beam to pull out the win.

Luverne took the top three finishes on vault, led by Amira Cowell (9.2), Ella Reisdorfer (9.125) and Addyson Mann (8.75). Luverne also had the top two finishes on the beam, led by Reisdorfer (9.125 and Reagan Gangestad (8.3).

The Eagles have been missing top beam performer in senior Olivia Eckstein, who has been out of action with an injury since late December and is inching closer to her return. Sellner has been solid in a leadership role for the Eagles without Eckstein, but the Cardinals still managed to spoil New Ulm’s season-high score.

Sellner also took first on floor routine (9.2) and was second on bars (8.6). Sophia Berger also took fourth all-around for the Eagles with a 32.8, including a third-place finish on beam (8.2) and a fourth-place finish on floor (9).

Also for the Eagles, Isabelle Longtin took fourth on vault (8.75), while Avarey Sellner took fifth on vault (8.65). Joelle Haala finished fourth on bars (7.7) for New Ulm, while Aurora Marazzina took third on floor (9.15), fifth on beam (8.1) and fifth on bars (7.575).

Despite the loss, head coach Kortney Peterson said she was happy with the season-high score.

“This is a season-high score,” she said. “It was great to see the girls end on a high note. They had an exceptional night on floor, with three gymnasts scoring 9 or above. We are exactly where I wanted to be, which is peaking right into the postseason.”

New Ulm is at St. James Area for the Section 2A gymnastics meet on Feb. 15.
