MANKATO — Sleepy Eye United sent three individuals and their girls golf team to the State Golf Tournament during the Section 2A Golf Tournament at North Links Golf Course on Monday, punching their ticket to Pebble Creek Golf Club on June 13-14.

SEU’s Sam Price won the individual meet, scoring 187 over two days of play, while her teammate, Liz Schwint, placed second with 189. Price, Schwint, and the rest of the SEU girls team of Jaci Domeier, Meriden Andres, Chloe Walter and Kiara Murphy helped bring the SEU girls to a first place finish, scoring a 797, including a season-best 386 on the second day. Murphy placed eighth with 215, Andres placed ninth with 217, Walter was 12th with 222 and Domeier was 14th with 235.

“Today was the best round we’ve had all year, score wise,” SEU head coach Bryant Mages said. “We shot 386 for 18 holes. We had a 189 on the front nine, which was five better than our best nine-hole score all year. It was really good for us. Everybody showed up and just played relaxed, so it was really good to see that from us.”

SEU’s Carson Erickson also qualified for the State Tournament, placing sixth in the boys meet with a 155.

Also qualifying for the state tournament were Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s Ben Pearson for the boys and Cedar Mountain’s Keanna Hultquist for the girls. Pearson placed second for the boys with a 152, while Hultquist placed fifth for the girls with a 211. New Ulm Cathedral’s Owen Strei finished just outside the cut at eighth with a 161.

For the girls meet team scores, after first place SEU, Madelia placed second with a 972, followed by Cathedral with a 1044.

For the boys teams, Janesville-Waldorf Pemberton placed first with 658, followed by Cathedral (693), United South Central (695) and Minnesota Valley Lutheran (719).

Mages thought that Price and Schwint could find success in the state tournament.

“I think they can play very well at state,” Mages said. “Their goal was to finish first and second in the section, so they’ve got that checked off the list here. They’ve both played up at state before, all the girls have, so hopefully they can both have good rounds at state.”

Erickson also returns to state after qualifying for each of the past two years.

“Carson, he’s been playing really well lately,” Mages said. “He didn’t have his best stuff in the first day. Thankfully, today he played a lot better. He’s experienced at Pebble Creek, so hopefully he can put two good days together and see what happens from there.”
