Area roundup: Rabbits softball team 2 wins from state

PREP SOFTBALL

Wabasso 6, RTR 5

Wabasso 9, KMS 8

MARSHALL — Wabasso two two games on Tuesday at the Marshall Softball Complex to advance to the Section 3A Softball Tournament finals on Thursday.

The Rabbits first topped Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 6-5 before beating Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 9-8.

Addisyn Hillesheim was 1 for 4 with a double, an RBI and three runs scored to lead Wabasso over RTR, while Kesley Frank and Avery Carlson each went 1 for 3. Avery Carlson also got the win in 5 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run on three walks and three hits while fanning six.

In the win over No. 1-seeded KMS, Avery Carlson was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, while Sara Carlson was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Hillesheim also went 2 for 3 with an RBI against KSM, while Callie Burns was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Lyla Kittelson was 2 for 3.

The Rabbits need two wins on Thursday over Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian in Marshall to advance to the state tourney. The Section 3A championship begins at 4 p.m., with a 6 p.m. game if needed.

PREP BASEBALL

Sleepy Eye 10, MCW 0 (5 innings)

SLEEPY EYE — Top-seeded Sleepy Eye shut out eighth-seeded Martin County West 10-0 on Tuesday in a Section 2A baseball playoff game.

MCW committed nine errors in the loss, while Sleepy Eye played error-free baseball.

Nick Mielke and Kaleb Butenhoff each went 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead the Indians at the plate, while Cody Schultz was 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs and Arian Saenz doubled and scored two runs.

Mielke also got the win on the mound in all five innings, allowing two hits and a walk while fanning eight.

Sleepy Eye will next host fourth-seeded Mankato Loyola at 5 p.m. on Thursday in Sleepy Eye.

Loyola 2, St. Mary’s 1

MANKATO — Fourth-seeded Mankato Loyola earned a 2-1 walk-off win over fifth-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Tuesday in a Section 2A baseball playoff game.

Mark Anderson got a no decision in seven innings of work for the Knights, striking out 12 and allowing one hit and two walks for one unearned run. Talan Helget took the loss in 1/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits for one run.

Kaleb Wait led the Knights at the plate, going 2 for 4, while Brandon Schmitz doubled and Kessler Severson had a hit and an RBI.

The Knights hosts Martin County West in elimination play at 7 p.m. Thursday.

PREP BASEBALL

GHEC/T/ML 9, Springfield 6

SPRINGFIELD — SIxth-seeded Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther upset third-seeded Springfield on Tuesday in a Section 2A Baseball Tournament game.

Jackson Ludewig led the Tigers at the plate in defeat, going 1 for 3 with two RBIs, while Kade Nachreiner was 1 for 4 with two RBIs and Jakob Nachreiner doubled.

Ethan Louwagie got the start for Springfield and pitched two innings, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two.

Springfield hosts seventh-seeded Madelia on Thursday in elimination play.
