New Ulm boys take 2nd place at home meet

NEW ULM — The New Ulm boys track and field team turned in a strong showing Tuesday at a home track and field event at New Ulm High School, finishing second overall with 94 points.

Seven teams competed, including Minnesota Valley Lutheran/New Ulm Cathedral.

The Marshall boys took first with 133 points, followed by New Ulm, Redwood Valley (92.5), Tri-City United (86), MVL/NUC (62), Sibley East (52) and Windom Area (46.5).

The girls side of the meet was won by TCU (120), while Redwood Valley took second (114). The Marshall girls finished third (103), followed by Sibley East (87), Windom Area (61), MVL/NUC (38) and New Ulm (36).

Key contributors for the New Ulm boys team included Nathan Wolkow, who finished first in the boys shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 11 inches, as well as first in boys discus throw with a throw of 130 feet, both personal bests. Easton Clark also did well for New Ulm, placing second in both the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 24.03, a personal best, and in the boys long jump with a jump of 19-07. Ethan Lieb won the boys high jump event with a jump of 6 feet, a personal best.

For the Eagles girls team, Laura Bertrang was a standout athlete, as she placed first in both the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.82, a personal best, and in the girls high jump with a jump of 5 feet. Kaelyn Eikanger finished fifth in the girls high jump (4-06) and was on the fifth-place girls 4×200 relay team (2:06.06). Keira Holberg finished fourth in the girls triple jump (30-08). Will Kaesermann came up big for the MVL/NUC boys, finishing first in the boys 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.84, a personal best, placed second in the boys 300-meter hurdles (46.69), and third in the triple jump (38-11.50). Kaesermann was also on the first-place boys 4×200 relay team that finished with a time of 1:40.03. Josh Bentler placed fourth in both the boys 100 (personal-best time of 11.96) and was on the fourth-place boys 4×100 relay team that had a time of 49.64. Ben Halvorson finished third in the boys 200 (24.11) and was also on the 4×200 team with Kaesermann.

Claudia Weisensel was a key part of the Chargers girls team, finishing first in the girls 300-meter hurdles (53.66) and third in the girls 100 (18.61). She was also on the third-place 4×100 relay team that had a time of 54.99.

Emily Brown finished fourth in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.72, a personal best, and fourth in the girls 300-meter hurdles (56.20.)

She was also on the 4×100 relay team with Weisensel and Averelle Hopp, who also finished third in the girls 200 (28.10).
