NEW ULM — It will be a comeback that will be talked about for many seasons.

Down 53-41 to seventh-seeded New Prague with just over seven minutes to go in the game, New Ulm outscored the Trojans 17-2 to close out the game and come away with a 58-55 win Tuesday night in a Section 2AAA quarterfinals game.

Colton Benson led the Eagles with 21 points, while James Osborne added 10 points and Nate Firle had 8.

Evan Weichert led the Trojans, who ended their season at 7-20, with 16 points.

New Ulm, now 21-5, plays Worthington, a 61-54 winner over Jordan, on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Down 53-41, the Eagles began their epic comeback with two free throws from Firle.

That was followed by a Benson basket and a 3 from Osborne before Benson added another basket to cut the lead to 53-49.

Spencer LaRue’s basket — the only hoop in the last seven minutes of the game for New Prague — gave the Trojans some hope.

But two Benson charity shots followed by a Firle basket and a Benson 3 gave the Eagles a 56-55 lead.

It was their first lead of the game the game since they led 3-2 and at one time trailed 14-3 with four minutes gone in the first half.

Benson said that the talk at halftime was simple.

“We came together,” the junior said. “We realized what was at stake — if we do not win, we go home and our season is over. There is no moving on. We had a sense of urgency.”

New Ulm head coach Matt Dennis thought that the game may have swung towards the Eagles on an Osborne 3.

“When Jimmy hit that 3 from the corner, I think that changed the complexion of the game,” Dennis said. “That was a big shot from a big-time kid — I thought that now it is close enough and we can see it. And now we really believe — that turned the game for us.”

Dennis also thought that the defensive play of Collin Horning also played a role in the comeback.

“He played extremely hard without fouling and he put a lot of pressure on Worthington.”

Benson said after the comeback, New Ulm’s confidence has only grown.

“This is a huge confidence-booster for us,” Benson said. “Now we have that snowball effect — now we can keep going.”
