New Ulm breezes by Hutchinson behind Benson’s 30 points

NEW ULM — For the second straight game, the New Ulm Eagles boys basketball team put on an offensive show.

Colton Benson tossed in a game-high 30 points and James Osborne finished with 22 as New Ulm rolled by Hutchinson 96-55 Tuesday night in a nonconference game.

Collin Horning added 10 as New Ulm improved to 17-4 on the season.

Kaden Butler ended with 16 for the Tigers.

“Our boys found each other tonight all over the floor,” New Ulm head coach Matt Dennis said. “We were pushing the ball in our offenses — our back cuts. They worked together really well on offense.”

The 90 point-plus game was the fourth for the Eagles this season. In their last game, New Ulm put 97 points on the board against Blue Earth Area.

Dennis was also happy with the play of his defense, especially in the first half, holding the Tigers to 24 first-half points.

“We had real nice execution of our game plan on defense,” he said.

The Eagles, who host Marshall Thursday night, never trailed in the game and took a 24-14 lead on an Ayden Jensen bucket off of a Tigers turnover.

New Ulm followed that up with a 12-2 run that saw the Eagles holding a 36-16 lead.

Baskets from Collin Horning, Easton Clark, Benson and Osborne made it a 20-point New Ulm lead before a 13-3 spurt made it a 49-19 lead on a Jensen basket.

New Ulm controlled the second half, building a 63-34 lead on an Osborne basket and later led 80-42.

It was a game that saw 10 different Eagles players score in the game.

“Whenever you can score in the 90s or higher, that is a very good offensive night,” Dennis said.

New Ulm hosts Marshall on Thursday night.
