Steel snap streak with 6-4 win over Alexandria

NEW ULM — The six-game winless streak for the New Ulm Steel is over.

New Ulm jumped to a 6-1 lead after two periods before holding off a three-goal Alexandria third period to come away with a 6-4 win over the Blizzard Friday night in an NA3HL game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Zach Dalzell had two goals for the Steel with Charlies Kielty, Griffin Lennes, Hunter Nelson and Cooper Kantola each adding a goal. Landen Schwantes and Charlie Kielty each had two assists with Gus Cantwell, Connor Souza, Johnny Trasher, Jack Laser, Blake Biermaier, Macrae Gordon, Nelson and Kantola each adding helpers.

Steel goalie Nolan Lacosse stopped 50 shots, with 23 of them coming in the three goal third period where Alexandria outshot New Ulm 23-2.

“We are a team that is still learning how to win,” Steel coach Alex North said. “And that kind of showed itself in the third period.”

The Steel, who host Willmar Saturday at 7:10 p.m. at the New Ulm Civic Center, built a 3-0 lead after the first period on goals from Cooper Kantola, Hunter Nelson and Zach Dalzell.

That lead grew to 6-1 after scores from Dalzell, Charlie Kielty and Griffin Lennes.

But in the third period the Blizzard gained momentum.

“We were trying not to make mistakes in that third period rather than just playing the game,” North said. “Alexandria is a team that is experienced enough to take advantage of that. This is my first win against Alexandria as a head coach so now we need to be ready for Willmar on Saturday.”
