St. Cloud 5, New Ulm 3

SARTELL — St. Cloud defeated New Ulm 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon in girls’ hockey action at the Sartell Invitational at Bernick’s Arena.

New Ulm scored the first three goals of the game, two in the first period and one in the second, before St. Cloud scored five unanswered goals to win. Malorie Anderson, Julia Helget and Evie Sellner scored a goal for the Eagles. Afton Hulke added two assists for New Ulm, while Maddi O’Connor, Helget and Brooke Arenson each had an assist.

Ava Brennan had 24 saves in the loss for the Eagles in net.

New Ulm (11-2) is at Marshall on Jan. 6.

Boys’ Hockey

Detroit Lakes 3, New Ulm 2

FERGUS FALLS — Detroit Lakes scored the go-ahead goal with two seconds left on Wednesday afternoon to top New Ulm 3-2 in boys’ hockey action at the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic.

Bryer Lang scored a goal for New Ulm, assisted by Dawson Kraus and Austin Uecker, while Uecker also had a goal unassisted.

Dawson Sellner stopped 34 shots in net for the Eagles in the loss.

The Eagles (6-3) wrap up their time in the Holiday Classic at noon Thursday when they take on Kittson Central.

Brandon-Evansville 66,

Cedar Mountain 57

COTTONWOOD — Brandon-Evansville topped Cedar Mountain 66-57 on Wednesday in boys’ basketball action at the Lakeview Holiday Tournament.

Max Pendleton and Branndon Pendleton each had 14 points to lead Cedar Mountain, while Dakota Sam-Pendleton added 8 points and Blake Steffl had 7. Max Pendleton also had six rebounds.

Cedar Mountain (3-3) continue play in the tournament at 4 p.m. on Thursday when they take on Ortonville.

Sleepy Eye 53, Minneota 52

MARSHALL — Sleepy Eye took down Minneota 53-52 on Wednesday in girls’ basketball ac-tion at the Borch’s Holiday Classic at Southwest Minnesota State University.

The Indians were led by Kadence Hesse, who had 18 points and four assists. Kaydince Thoms had 16 points and three steals for Sleepy Eye, while

RTR 50, Springfield 41

MARSHALL — Russell-Tyler-Ruthton defeated Springfield 50-41 on Wednesday afternoon in girls’ basketball action at the Southwest Minnesota State University Invite.

Springfield was led by Megan Ploeger’s 16 points and seven rebounds, while Emma Hauger added 9 points. Maddy Digmann and Brooklyn Sturm had 6 points and 10 rebounds apiece for the Tigers.

Springfield (1-7) is at Morgan to take on Cedar Mountain on Tuesday.

Canby 48, Wabasso 28

MARSHALL — Canby defeated Wabasso 48-28 on Wednesday in girls’ basketball action at the Southwest Minnesota State University Invite.

The Rabbits (4-7) were led by Avery Carlson’s 11 points and three assists, while Sophia Hanna added 6 points.

Springfield 58, MLA/C 53

MOUNTAIN LAKE — Springfield earned its first win of the season on Tuesday with a 58-53 win over Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey in nonconference girls’ basketball action.

The Tigers were led by Maddy Digmann’s 12 points, while Brooklyn Sturm had 11 points, 13 rebounds and six steals. Megan Ploeger had 10 points for Springfield also, while Marissa Pabst had 9 points and Emma Hauger had 8 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Minneota 54, Wabasso 24

MINNEOTA — Minnesota downed Wabasso 54-24 on Tuesday night in a nonconference girls’ basketball game at the Southwest Minnesota State University Invite.

Wabasso was led by Bella Brand’s 7 points, three assists and three rebounds, while Kelsey Frank had 6 points and three steals. Avery Carlson added 4 points, three steals and three rebounds for the Rabbits.

Mankato Loyola 74, MVL 54

MANKATO — Mankato Loyola downed Minnesota Valley Lutheran 74-54 on Tuesday night in boys’ basketball action at the Kwik-Trip Holiday Basketball Tournament at Bethany Lutheran College.

MVL was led by Will Kaesserman’s 9 points and six rebounds, while Ben Pearson had 8 points, six rebounds and three assists. Also for MVL, Cole Thompson had 8 points and five assists and Ben Halverson had 8 points.

Fergus Falls 7, New Ulm 2

FERGUS FALLS — Fergus Falls topped New Ulm 7-2 on Tuesday night in boys’ hockey action at the Fergus Falls Holiday Classic.

Josh Gulden and Jack Albrecht scored New Ulm’s goals, while Luke Steffensmeier added an assist. Fergus Falls outshot New Ulm 40-18.

Dawson Sellner took the loss for New Ulm in net, stopping 27 shots. Bryer Hoffmann saw some time in net also for New Ulm, stopping all six shots against him.
