New Ulm sneaks past Waseca

NEW ULM — With New Ulm and Waseca’s singles matches splitting at 2-2 on Tuesday, the New Ulm doubles teams had to come up big.

And the Eagles did just that.

No. 1 doubles team of Lilian Merkel and Melanie Merkel earned a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Waseca’s Miranda Breck and Jaidence Medina to help decide the match. That victory, along with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles by Nevaeh Ubl and Katie Wilker helped the Eagles to a 4-3 Big South Conference girls’ tennis victory at New Ulm High School.

“That was super cool, we haven’t really won at doubles all year,” New Ulm head coach Peter Engeldinger said. “Three doubles [Ubl and Wilker] won pretty handily early on and we were up 3-0 and four matches were being played, No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 1 and 2 doubles, so we needed just one more. They got three of them, so it was super sweet to see the Merkel twins, Lilian and Melanie, they’ve been climbing through the ranks and it was a lot of fun to see.”

New Ulm got victories from Lydia King at No. 3 singles, where she took care of Nicola DeJager 6-0, 6-2. Emily Guggisberg picked up a win at No. 4 singles, winning 6-1, 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Waseca’s CeCe Huttemier won 6-2, 6-4 over Makiah Otto and Waseca’s Sarah Robbins defeated New Ulm’s Malia Emerson 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Waseca’s No. 2 doubles team of Sarah Haley and Addie Bomsta defeated New Ulm’s team of Lana Braun and Calyn Glaser 7-6 (4), 6-4.

New Ulm is at Blue Earth Area on Thursday.
