Area roundup: Greyhounds sweep Indians in Tomahawk volleyball, New Ulm shuts out Loyola in girls’ soccer

Cathedral 3, Sleepy Eye 0

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral swept Sleepy Eye 25-12, 25-15, 25-11 on Tuesday night in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

The Greyhounds got 13 kills and three blocks from Sydnee Helget, while Megan Haala had six kills, eight ace serves and eight digs. Emily Schommer had 19 set assists and four aces for the Greyhounds, while Jenna Hotovec had seven kills.

The Indians were led by Kadence Hesse’s four kills, eight digs and three blocks, while Breaunna Mertz had four kills and three digs and Nayzeth Luna had eight digs.

Cathedral (9-1, 3-0) is at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday, while Sleepy Eye (4-5-1) is at Cedar Mountain on Thursday.

St. Peter 3, New Ulm 2

ST. PETER — St. Peter topped New Ulm 21-25, 28-26, 25-21, 21-25, 17-15 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference volleyball match.

Natalie Yackley had 41 set assists and 15 digs for the Eagles, while Laura Bertrang had 10 kills and six blocks. Also for New Ulm, Maddi O’Connor had 11 kills and 19 digs, Afton Hulke had 11 kills, 22 digs and three blocks, Graceyn Nesje had seven digs and Ella Freiderich had 21 digs.

New Ulm (3-2, 2-1) is at St. James on Thursday.

St. Mary’s 3, LeSueur-Henderson 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s swept LeSueur-Henderson 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Madison Mathiowetz had 19 kills, seven digs, and two blocks to lead the Knights. Reagan Severson had six digs, while Julia Helget added eight digs with three blocks. Bella Hoffmann had 15 set assists and five digs. Allie Labat had 19 set assists and six digs. Katelyn Rutscher added five kills and two blocks. Jaci Domeier had five kills and three blocks. Abby Schwartz added three digs and one kill.

SESM (9-0, 1-0) will host New Ulm Cathedral (8-1, 2-0) on Thursday.

Nicollet 3, LCWM 1

NICOLLET — Nicollet defeated Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 25-19, 22-25, 25-17, 25-20 on Thursday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Brooklyn Bode had 11 kills and nine blocks for the Raiders. Hayley Selby added 14 kills with 22 digs. Marah Hulke had 28 set assists, while Brook Gohr added eight blocks.

The Raiders (3-5, 1-1) will play at Alden-Conger on Thursday.

BLHS 3, Cedar Mountain 1

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart topped Cedar Mountain 3-1 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Hailey Hollar led the Cougars with 11 kills and 19 digs, while Nadia Meyers had 25 set assists, six kills and six digs. Also for Cedar Mountain, Mykenna Vollmer had nine kills and 13 digs, Teresa Larsen and Megan Sandgren added six kills each. Lauren Baringer had 16 digs for Cedar Mountain, while Morgan Engholm added 12 digs.

Cedar Mountain (4-5, 1-1) hosts Sleepy Eye on Thursday.

Alden-Conger 3, Madelia 1

MADELIA — Alden-Conger topped Madelia 25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-15 on Tuesday in Valley Conference volleyball action.

Brooke Lensing and Corban Tatro each had eight kills to lead Madelia, while Dora Facundo had 19 digs, Malia Schwanke had 13 digs and Ashley Sorenson had 28 set assists. Tatro also had 20 digs, while Ashlyn Sweet had six aces.

Madelia (3-7-1, 1-1) is at Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Tuesday.

Cleveland 3, Sibley East 1

ARLINGTON — Cleveland topped Sibley East 26-28, 25-15, 25-9, 25-11 on Tuesday in a nonconference volleyball match.

Sibley East was led by Adeline Williams, who had 16 set assists, six digs and three aces, while Molly Krentz had nine kills, six digs and two blocks. Jennifer Wolter had seven kills for Sibley East, while Jessica Wolter had six kills and Eleanor Kreft had 10 set assists.

Sibley East (2-3) hosts Norwood-Young America in Minnesota River Conference action on Thursday.

Girls’ Soccer

New Ulm 4, Mankato Loyola 0

MANKATO — New Ulm shut out Mankato Loyola 4-0 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference girls’ soccer game.

Livia Reinarts scored all four goals for the Eagles, who had seven shots on goal and 29 total shots. Ariana Dreyer stopped four shots for New Ulm in net.

New Ulm (3-4) is at Waseca on Thursday.

College Volleyball

St. Catherine 3, MLC 0

ST. PAUL – The Martin Luther College volleyball team lost its return match at St. Catherine 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-21) on Tuesday.

Kelsey Birschbach led MLC with nine kills, but Lauren Paulsen (six kills) was the only other MLC hitter to finish with more than two kills. Birschbach also led the Knights with 10 digs.

MLC fell to 1-7 on the season in defeat. St. Catherine improved to 4-6 with the win.

Late Monday

Prep Volleyball

RRC 3, Cedar Mountain 0

LAMBERTON — Red Rock Central swept Cedar Mountain 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 on Monday night in nonconference volleyball action.

Cedar Mountain was led by Hailey Hollar’s 18 kills and 15 digs, while Nadia Meyers had 21 set assists, five kills and 12 digs. Mykenna Vollmer led with 18 digs, while Megan Sandgren had five kills and 10 digs, Morgan Engholm added nine digs and Lauren Baringer had eight digs.
