Area roundup: Thunderbirds bolt by Alden-Conger

GFW 60, Alden-Conger 6

ALDEN — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop coasted to a 60-6 win over Alden-Conger on Friday night in a Mid Southeast District football game.

The Thunderbirds amassed 466 total yards on offense and held Alden-Conger to just 77.

Treay Taylor rushed for 130 yards and two scores on nine carries and also caught two passes for 40 yards and a TD to lead GFW, while Brody Hentges threw for 94 yards and two scores on 5-of-7 passing. Also for GFW on offense, Nick TenEyck ran for 75 yards and a TD on five carries and also caught a 41-yard TD pass, Jack Panitzke ran for 52 yards and a TD and Tristian Kruger ran for 36 yards and a TD.

On defense, TenEyck led with six tackles, while Easton Taylor had five tackles and 1/2 sack and Ashton Buboltz had four tackles and 1/2 sack. Justin Messner had an interception also for GFW.

The Thunderbirds (2-0) host Cleveland at 7 p.m. Friday in Winthrop.

Edgerton 22, Cedar Mountain 14

MORGAN — Edgerton topped Cedar Mountain 22-14 on Friday night in a 9-man, South District football game.

Cedar Mountain was led by Cooper Freitag, who completed 13 of 17 passes for 187 yards and two TDs. Nick Freitag caught all 13 passes for 187 yards and two scores.

The Cougars were led on defense by Matt Zeug, who had 12 total tackles, while Maverick Weber added 8 1/2 total tackles.

Cedar Mountain (1-1) hosts Lyle-Pacelli at 7 p.m. Friday.

Hutchinson 5, New Ulm 2

Monticello 4, New Ulm 3

HUTCHINSON — New Ulm went 0-2 at the Hutchinson girls’ tennis triangular on Friday.

Against Hutchinson, Malia Emerson won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Lydia King won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

Against Monticello, Makiah Otto won 6-3, 6-1 at first singles and Emerson won 6-2, 6-2 at second singles. King picked up a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.

College volleyball

St. Catherine 3, MLC 0

ST. PAUL — The Martin Luther College volleyball team 25-16, 25-18, 25-22 to St. Catherine in women’s volleyball action on Friday.

The Wildcats controlled the first set from start to finish, and then won eight of the final 10 points in the second set to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

MLC tried to extend the match in the third game, fighting back from a 22-13 deficit to trail 23-22 late in the set, but the Wildcats scored the final two points to finish off the sweep.

Kelsey Birschbach led the Knights with eight kills, and Rhianna Hunter chipped in five.

Kate Aswege led all players with 16 digs, while Anna Treder also reached double figures with 10 digs. Hannah Willems finished with three of the Knights’ five blocks.

MLC fell to 0-5 on the season in defeat and will return to action Saturday when it plays matches against Buena Vista (11 a.m. at Hamline) and Whitman (1 p.m. at St. Catherine).

Prep volleyball

Madelia 3, MCW 2

SHERBURN — Madelia rallied from two sets down and defeated Martin County West in Valley Conference volleyball on Thursday.

Jada Taylor had 24 digs for Madelia and Brooke Lensing finished with 24 kills. Ashley Sorenson finished with 53 set assists.

Madelia (2-3, 1-0) plays at the Sleepy Eye Invite on Saturday.

Boys’ soccer

Worthington 8, New Ulm 0

WORTHINGTON — Worthington crushed New Ulm in a Big South Conference boys’ soccer game on Thursday.

New Ulm had only two shots on goal. Ethan Goff had 22 saves for New Ulm.

New Ulm hosts Hutchinson at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
