Greyhounds race past Bulldogs in 5

NEW ULM — Benefitting from 10 hits and eight Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton errors on Monday at Johnson Park, New Ulm Cathedral put things away early with a 12-2 win in five innings of nonconference baseball action.

Sam Knowles led the Greyhounds (16-3) with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, collecting two doubles, a triple and an RBI. He also scored three runs.

David Wilfahrt also had an RBI double for Cathedral. Riley Prochniak got the win for Cathedral, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Keltin Erler took the loss in four innings for the Bulldogs (7-9), giving up nine runs on seven hits and five walks.

Cathedral scored two runs in the bottom of the second on a throwing error to first after the JWP second baseman got a force-out at second. Justin Berg and Wilfahrt each scored.

Cody Gartner scored for JWP in the top of the third on a wild pitch. He originally reached on a swinging strikeout that bounced in the dirt and reached the backstop. The Greyhounds added four more runs in the bottom of the inning, led by Wilfahrt’s RBI double. Cathedral also scored two runs in the inning on errors and one on a fielder’s choice by Carter Haala.

JWP added its final run in the top of the fourth on an error that scored Ethan Winters. Cathedral got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth for a 9-2 lead, led by an RBI triple by Knowles to right-center. Knowles ended up scoring on the hit after an error in the outfield.

An error at first scored the final run of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Cathedral filled the bases on walks by Isaiah Rieser, Noah Wilmes and Knowles with one out before Jacob Berg singled in Rieser for a 10-2 Cathedral lead. Thomas Finstad brought in Wilmes with a single before Brody Bushard singled in the game-ending run.

Cathedral hosts Wabasso at Mueller Park on Tuesday.
