NEW ULM — Emily Schommer’s leadoff double and run in the ninth lifted New Ulm Cathedral to an 8-7 win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in Tomahawk Conference softball action Tuesday at Harman Park.

With things knotted up at 7-7 in the ninth inning, Schommer doubled to lead off. Haala then singled Schommer up a base, putting runners at the corners for the Greyhounds.

Then, as Haala carefully made her way to second to steal a bag and coax a throw to second, a throw from the catcher to third got by the third baseman and allowed Schommer to scamper home for the winning run.

Kiah Helget got the win for the Greyhounds, pitching nine innings and allowing 10 hits and five walks. She had one strikeout.

Offensively, the Greyhounds were led by Haala’s three-hit game, while Schommer and Sydney Helget each homered and had two hits and two RBIs apiece. Schommer also had a double and scored three runs, while Sarah Mohr scored three runs.

Megan Ahlness took the loss for the Knights in relief of Lacey Mathiowetz, allowing three earned runs on six hits and a walk in 3 2/3 innings.

Mathiowetz pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up three hits and three walks while striking out six. She exited the game in the fifth after taking a hard line drive off the body.

Isabella Hoffmann, Emily Weiss and Maya Nelson all had two hits and a double apiece to lead the Knights, with Hoffmann and Weiss driving in a run.

Despite the end result, it was a low-scoring affair through the first several innings. After Sydney Windschitl led off the first inning with a triple, Hoffmann drove her in on a double to center field for a 1-0 Knights lead.

In the bottom of the first, Cathedral tied it on an RBI single to center by Haala that scored Mohr, who walked to lead off the inning. The Greyhounds took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Jenna Hotovec and then led 4-1 after a two-run homer by Schommer in the fifth.

Helget had a tough sixth inning, giving up an infield single and back-to-back walks to start the inning. The Greyhounds got an out on a pop-up before an error on a throw to first led to the Knights’ first run of the inning.

Windschitl then walked in another run for the Knights before a throw to home on a fielder’s choice was not in time, tying the game at 4-all. A wild pitch scored the next run and a double by Helget scored the fifth run of the inning. The double also ended up getting the second out of the inning on a throw to home, but the Knights pushed across another run on a single to right by Weiss to lead 7-4.

The Greyhounds got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a leadoff homer by Helget and then tied it at 7-all in the seventh on RBI singles from Lily Franta and Helget.

The original plan for Tuesday was a doubleheader, but after a lengthy first game and due to the dropping temperatures, the second game was postponed.
