Area roundup: New Ulm tennis team takes down St. Peter

New Ulm 6, St. Peter 1

NEW ULM — New Ulm defeated St. Peter in a Big South Conference boys’ tennis match on Thursday.

Isaac Blumhoefer won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Max Gieseke won 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Joey Gag picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles and Ben Brownfield won 6-4, 6-3 at fourth singles.

Nathaniel Janssen and Leo Waloch won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles and Parker Sunderman and Isaac Davis won 7-6, 6-0 at third doubles.

Prep baseball

BLHS 5, Sleepy Eye 1

SLEEPY EYE — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart defeated Sleepy Eye in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Braden McColley earned the win for the Mustangs. He allowed four hits, one run and struck out three.

Arian Saenz took the loss for the Indians. He allowed five hits and three earned runs in five innings, striking out eight.

Nic Taylor was 2 for 3 for BLHS and Nick Mielke and Erizen Traconis each doubled for Sleepy Eye.

Sleepy Eye (0-2) hosts St. Clair on Monday.

Cathedral 6, Springfield 5

SPRINGFIELD — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Springfield in a Tomahawk Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Sam Knowles allowed four runs in five innings and he struck out six. Riley Prochniak earned the win, allowing one run in two innings.

Tori Helget pitched two innings for in the loss.

Madelia 11, Nicollet 1, 5 inn.

Madelia — Madelia topped Nicollet in a Valley Conference baseball game on Thursday.

Dylan Grev earned the win, striking out eight in five innings. Carter Florez was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Garrett Reed was 2 for 2 with a double.

Madelia (1-2) is at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Tuesday.

Prep softball

St. Mary’s 8, MVL 0

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s blanked Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a Tomahawk Conference softball game on Thursday.

Megan Ahlness went the distance and earned the win. She allowed five hits and struck out five. Emily Weiss was 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Sydney Windschitl was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.

Becca Kuck took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits. She struck out four and walked six. Morgan Paulsen was 2 for 3 to lead the MVL offense.

Wabasso 10, GFW 7

WABASSO — Sarah Franta got the win, she also had a hit with two RBIs as Wabasso defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in a Tomahawk Conference softball game.

Avery Carlson had a triple with an RBI and Kelsey Fischer had a double for the Rabbits. Kylee Fogelson had a pair of hits. Kelsey Frank, Cassidy Irlbeck, and Halle Huhnerkoch each had a hit in the game for Wabasso.

Madelia 8, A-C/G-E 7

MADELIA — Madelia defeated Alden-Conger/Glenville-Emmons in a Valley Conference softball game on Thursday.

Addie Ahern was 4 for 4 with an RBI for Madelia and Corban Tatro allowed seven runs and eight hits in seven innings. She struck out seven in seven innings for the win.

Springfield boys 171, Cathedral 205, BLHS 213, MVL 233

Girls incomplete

HECTOR — The Springfield boys won a Tomahawk Conference quadrangular on Thursday against New Ulm Cathedral, Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart and Minnesota Valley Lutheran.

Mavrick Winkelmann shot a 33 to lead Springfield and Logan Haala shot a 41 for Cathedral.

On the girls’ side, MVL’s Nadine Clobes shot a 46 and Abbie Riederer shot a 47. Cathedral’s Kayla Goblirsch shot a 47.

MCW boys 205, LCWM/Nic 208, Madelia 213

Girls incomplete

MADELIA — Madelia took third at a Valley Conference boys’ golf meet behind Martin County West and Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet.

Luke Stensrud led Madelia with a 48 and MCW’s Hunter Schmidt was the medalist with a 39.

On the girls’ side, Madelia’s Savannah Wyman led the way with a 53.
