Franta lifts Rabbits past Cathedral

NEW ULM — Sarah Franta led Wabasso with 28 points to help the Rabbits down New Ulm Cathedral 70-29 on Friday in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.

Franta gave Cathedral fits the entire time that she was on the floor. She stole the ball on the first play of the game and scored on a lay-up. Lily Franta hit a 3 to give the Greyhounds a brief lead. Franta answered for Wabasso with a basket to regain the lead. Claire Olson hit a free throw to tie the game. Bella Brand dropped in two free throws to regain Wabasso’s lead at 6-4.

Later in the first half, a Wabasso defender stole the ball, pushed it to Franta and she scored on a fast-brak lay-up. This was a part of the Rabbit’s 16-0 run. Lily Franta ended Cathedral’s drought when she nailed a 3 from the left side of the arc.

Emily Schommer canned a 3 late in the first half. Livia Reinarts scored a basket for a 31-15 Wabasso lead.

Brand answered for Wabasso with two free throws and Kelsey Fischer scored a basket. Franta stole the ball from Cathedral on three consecutive plays and she scored on fast-break lay-ups for a 41-15 halftime advantage for Wabasso.

Franta and the Rabbits continued their assault to begin the second half. Avery Carlson scored, Franta three times and Ashlyn Daub scored. Kelsey Franta also hit two free throws for a 53-15 Rabbit lead. Maddie Gilles ended Wabasso’s run when she hit two free throws with 15:59 left in the contest. Olson scored a fast-break lay-up on the next trip down the court for Cathedral.

Wabasso continued to execute its offense, play well defensively, rebound well and keep Cathedral off-balance for the remainder of the game.

Abby Schugel scored 11 points for the Greyhounds. Brand added 10 points for Wabasso.

Wabasso (7-5) will play at Heron Lake/Okabena/Fulda on Tuesday. Cathedral (0-10) will play at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (13-0, 12-0) on Monday.
