Eagle girls knock off Hutchinson

NEW ULM — Brooke Arneson’s goal at the 10:12 mark of the third period broke a 3-3 tie and lifted the New Ulm Eagles girls’ hockey team to a 4-3 win over Hutchinson Tuesday night in a big Section 2A game.

It was the Eagles’ seventh straight win and improved New Ulm to 7-1 on the season.

Julia Helget, Malorie Anderson and Maddi O’Connor tallied the other goals for New Ulm with O’Connor recording her team-high ninth goal of the season.

Evie Sellner and Helget each had an assist.

Ava Brennan stopped 15 of 18 Tigers’ shots in the game.

The Eagles, who get back into Big South Conference play Thursday when they host Minnesota River at 7 p.m., used a strong first 17 minutes to build a 3-0 lead.

Helget got the Eagles on the board at 1-0 when she beat Tigers’ goalie Stello Docken on an unassisted goal at the 4:39 mark.

Malorie Anderson increased the lead to 2-0 just over a minute later when he shot was screened by Tigers’ defensemen and the puck found the back of the net at the 5:43 mark.

O’Connor capped off a dominating first period for the Eagles with an unassisted score at the 9:12 mark for a 3-0 cushion.

It was a first period that saw New Ulm outshoot Hutchinson 12-4.

But the Tigers, who fell to 3-6 on the season with the loss, scored two unanswered goals to cut the lead to 3-2 on goals from Ellie Petersen and Erin White as the Tigers outshot New Ulm 7-5 in the second period.

Hutchinson tied the game at 3-3 at the 5:33 mark of the third period.

But Arneson’s fifth goal of the season was the difference.

Hutchinson pulled Docken with one minute to go in the game but failed to score.

New Ulm outshot the Tigers 26-18 in the game.
