Mustangs edge Chargers in Tomahawk

NEW ULM — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart came to town and the Mustangs edged Minnesota Valley Lutheran 25-21, 28-26, 19-25, 22-25, 17-15 on Thursday in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

The match was competitve from start to finish. Both teams played well and there was a number of long volleys. Just when it appeared to be a point for one team, the other one returned the ball.

The fifth set was tight. MVL led 10-5. BLHS kept chipping away at the deficit, and it tied it at 11-11 on a block at the net. BLHS took the lead 12-11 on the next play with a soft drop of the ball over the net. A short time later, MVL took a 13-12 lead on a double block by the front line. BLHS responded with a kill to tie it at 13-13. The Mustangs had two consective kills to earn their final points for the set and match win.

MVL won the fourth set by pulling away from BLHS by building an 18-10 lead late in the set. The Chargers kept their momentum and held on to win the set.

The third set was also close. MVL did not trail throughout it. There were two ties in the set. BLHS closed the gap late, but MVL held on for the win.

The Mustangs battled back in the second set. There were four ties in it and MVL led for most of the set. BLHS regained the lead a couple of times. MVL was unable to return the ball twice in a row enabling the Mustangs to take the set.

BLHS slowing build a 17-12 lead in the first set. Despite being outscored 9-8, the Mustangs held off MVL to win the set.

MVL will host Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Tuesday.
