Eagle boys edge Mankato Loyola

NEW ULM — New Ulm won its third straight match as the Eagles edged Mankato Loyola 3-2 on Tuesday in a Big South Boys’ Soccer game at New Ulm High School.

Christian Edwards scored two goals to lead the Eagles offensively.

The Eagles scored first when Edwards scored a goal with 35:47 left in the first half. Joseph Gag made a header on the ball to Edwards who scored for a 1-0 New Ulm lead.

Later, Samo Barbosa made a corner kick to Edwards who scored his second goal with 15:20 remaining in the first half.

Loyola answered with a goal of its own. The Crusaders brought the ball up the field and they got it into the middle of field close to the goal. Anderson Flores scored an unassisted goal for a 2-1 halftime New Ulm advantage.

Jordan Richtsmeier scored the Eagles’ last goal on a free kick. Barbosa was credited with the assist on Richtsmeier’s goal.

Loyola was awarded a penalty kick with 49 seconds left in the contest. There, Wilber Coca-Romero scored for the 3-2 final.

New Ulm (3-3-2) will host Waseca on Oct. 2.
