Waseca tops New Ulm 5-2

NEW ULM — Waseca defeated New Ulm 5-2 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference girls’ tennis match.

“It was a nice, competitive match,” New Ulm head coach Pete Engeldinger said. “We got two victories, so that was nice.”

Emily Guggisberg and Maddie O’Connor lost at No. 1 doubles 7-5, 10-6 in a super tiebreaker. Engeldinger said the duo played hard and tried their best to pull out a win for the Eagles.

MaKenna Simpson and Gracelyn Nesje lost at No. 2 doubles 6-1, 6-0 love and Marissa Tedesco and Kate Frauenholtz lost at No. 3 doubles 6-0, 6-1.

Makiah Otto played at No. 1 singles for the first time this season. Otto returned from an injury, and she won 6-4, 6-3.

“It was nice to get a head start by getting the first points,” Otto said. She admitted that it was cold, but she knew she had to focus on taking it one point at a time and not get ahead of herself. Otto said there were a lot of good rallies, especially during the second set.

Engeldinger said that Waseca is a really good team.

Abby Hietala lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, Malia Emerson won 7-6, 7-3 (tie breaker) and 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Lydia King lost at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-4.

New Ulm will travel to St. Peter on Thursday.
