Brewers blank Orioles in Tomahawk East play

NEW ULM — Mitch Kelly fanned four and scattered two hits in four innings of work, and reliever Mitch Bockenstedt set down 15 straight Leavenworth hitters in a row, as the New Ulm Brewers improved to 4-2 in Tomahawk East League play. The Brewers blanked the Orioles 8-0 Sunday afternoon at Johnson Park.

Bockenstedt, who struck out nine, got the win for the Brewers who host Lamberton Thursday at Mueller Park at 7:30 p.m.

Bill Krueger took the loss for Leavenworth (1-4).

Andrew Peters had two of the Brewers’ seven hits. Peters and Jon Ahern each drove in two runs, with Ahern’s coming on a third inning double that capped a six-run inning.

Leavenworth’s only two hits of the game came in the fourth inning but were erased by New Ulm double play.

The Brewers, who recorded six steals of second in the game, took a 1-0 lead in the second on a walk to Braden Zimmerman, a stolen base and Peters’ single to right field.

New Ulm then broke the game open with six runs in the third inning.

J.T. Hoffmann and Hunter Ranweiler singled before Jaden Domeier singled home Hoffmann. A Zimmerman groundout plated a run before Peters singled in his second run of the game. An Ahern RBI double, a passed ball and a Brody Peterson sacrifice fly made it 7-0.

The Brewers added a run in the fourth on an Orioles’ error.
