SPRINGFIELD — Springfield erased a 12-point deficit late in the game and had a chance to send the game into overtime, but BOLD held on for an 82-80 victory over the Tigers on Friday night in a battle of Class A boys’ basketball powers.

Tied at 80 with less than 30 seconds left, BOLD’s Jordan Sagedal scored the eventual game-winning basket with 28.4 seconds to go. The Tigers called a timeout and had three chances to either tie the game or win it, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

BOLD, which led 74-62 at one point, looked to be running away late. But the Tigers mounted a comeback and went on a 17-6 run over the last 4 minutes of the game.

Decker Scheffler and Mitchell Buerkle led the Tiger comeback with some big baskets at the end. Scheffler finished with 24 points and Buerkle had 21 points. Nolan Hovland had 13 points and Ivan Hovland had 9 points.

“I think a lot of it was just trusting our stuff,” Nolan Hovland said. “Mitchell got hot, which was nice and Decker played well down low. Just sticking with our offense and not giving up on it, that was nice, too.”

Jordan Sagedahl scored 23 of his 29 points in the second half to lead the Warriors. Gavin Vosika finished with 25 points and Drew Sagedahl had 14 points for BOLD, which is the No. 1 ranked team in Class A.

“It’s hard to guard them, because they can drive and they can shoot and they can do whatever they want,” Nolan Hovland said of BOLD’s trio of guards. “It’s hard to guard and it’s hard to know what they’re about to do.”

The teams played a back-and-forth first half, with the Warriors going into halftime with a 38-36 lead.

The Warriors began to slowly pull away in the second half, going up 50-41 after a basket by Jordan Sagedahl. But Scheffler and Buerkle’s baskets trimmed the lead to 50-46, only to see BOLD go up 62-53 a few minutes later.

The Warriors took a 10-point lead with 9:25 left and they held the lead for the rest of the way. Up 74-62, BOLD’s lead began to fade after Buerkle hit a couple of 3s and Scheffler scored 8 straight points to make it 80-79.

With 56.7 seconds left, Nolan Hovland hit 1 of 2 free throws to tie it at 80 before Jordan Sagedahl’s eventual game-winner.

The Tigers (18-3) are at Minnesota Valley Lutheran (21-1) on Tuesday.
