Defense leads MLC women to 75-65 victory

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team scored a 75-65 win over Northland in front of a Parents’ Day crowd on Saturday.

The Knights won the game on the defensive end as they held the Lumberjills to 23.8% shooting overall and 11.1 percent (4-36) from beyond the 3-point arc. MLC also forced 20 Northland turnovers that turned into 17 points on the other end.

The teams were tied 15-15 after one quarter, but the Knights started to break free with a 21-point second quarter on the way to a 36-29 halftime lead.

Northland cut the MLC lead to 49-46 heading into the fourth quarter, but MLC stood tall in the final period, shooting 10-23 from the field and 5-9 from the free-throw line to secure the season split against the Lumberjills.

MLC finished the game shooting 34.6% from the field and 62.1% (18-29) from the charity stripe. The Knights did much of their damage inside as they outscored Northland 42-30 in the paint and 21-9 in second-chance points. MLC also dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Lumberjills 68-46 for the game.

Emily Witkowski and Kati Aguilar led MLC with 14 points apiece. Agular came up with several key scores late in the game after the Knights broke the Lumberjills’ press, while Witkowski also grabbed 11 rebounds. Cassandra Rose recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

MLC improved to 2-17 on the season and 2-9 in UMAC play with the win. Northland fell to 4-14 overall and 2-9 in league play in defeat.

The Knights return to action for a 7:15 p.m. home game Wednesday against Crown College.
