Prep roundup: Buerkle scores 1,000th point in Springfield win, New Ulm girls’ hockey team coasts by Worthington

Springfield 88, BLHS 26

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield’s Mitchell Buerkle scored his thousandth career point as Spingfield defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 88-26 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Buerkle scored 26 total points during the game. Also for Springfield, Decker Scheffler scored 17 points and Dylan Rubey scored 10 points.

Nicholas Taylor scored 11 points for BLHS.

Springfield (11-1) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s. BLHS plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Cedar Mountain.

Wabasso 73,

Sleepy Eye 46

SLEEPY EYE — Wabasso defeated Sleepy Eye 73-46 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Wabasso was led by Will Carlson with 21 points, Mason Dallenbach with 16 points, Isaac Kronback with 13 points and Colby Wall with 12 points.

Kegan Heiderscheidt led the Indians with 16 points.

Wabasso hosts Minnesota Valley Lutheran at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. Sleepy Eye plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

Nicollet 79, LCWM 46

LAKE CRYSTAL — Nicollet topped Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial on Tuesday night in Valley Conference boys’ basketball action.

Shane Stevenson led the Raiders (8-3, 4-0) with 25 points and six rebounds, while Colton Thomsen had 14 points and nine rebounds, Jon Mans had 13 points and Riley Hulke had a 12-point, 14-assist double-double.

Nicollet hosts Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity on Thursday.

Jordan 84, New Ulm 52

JORDAN — Jordan defeated New Ulm 84-52 on Tuesday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

New Ulm was led by Reece Melby with 15 points and Cole Rhode with 13 points.

New Ulm (3-9) hosts St. Peter at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

St. Mary’s 70,

Cathedral 34

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated New Ulm Cathedral 70-34 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

For St. Mary’s, Madison Mathiowetz had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, Liz Schwint scored 14 points and had seven rebounds, Reagan Severson had 10 points, three assists and three steals and Sydney Windschitl had 9 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Lily Franta was Cathedral’s leading scorer with 22 points.

Cathedral (2-11, 1-8) plays at 7 p.m. on Friday at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton. St. Mary’s (12-2, 7-2) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Springfield.

MVL 67,

Cedar Mountain 31

MORGAN — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Cedar Mountain 67-31 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

MVL was led by Abbie Riederer, who had 19 points and seven rebounds. Also for MVL, Emma Nelson had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Kaylee Hunter had 10 points and Maddie Pearson had six assists.

For Cedar Mountain, Megan Sandgren had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Trista Smith had 9 points.

MVL (11-2, 7-0) hosts Wabasso at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Cedar Mountain hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

New Ulm 82, Wabasso 48

WABASSO — New Ulm defeated Wabasso 82-48 on Tuesday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

The Eagles were led by Brynn Nesvold with 22 points, five steals and five assists, Kirsten Dennis with 15 points and five rebounds, Daviney Dreckman with 14 points and six rebounds and Hannah Osborne with 12 points, seven assists and six steals.

New Ulm (5-7) plays at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday in St. Peter. Wabasso plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Minnesota Valley Lutheran.

Prep wrestling

Wabasso 51, Quad County 18

WABASSO — The Wabasso/Red Rock Central wrestling team coasted to a 51-18 win over Quad County on Tuesday night in prep wrestling action.

For Wabasso/RRC, Adryen Tietz (106) and Vander Mathiowetz (152) picked up falls, while Hunter Wilke (113), Carter Beranek (120), Chase Irlbeck (138) and Mason Irlbeck (145) picked up wins by decision.

Girls’ hockey

Worthington 1

WORTHINGTON — New Ulm flew past Worthington/Fulda 8-1 on Tuesday night in Big South Conference girls’ hockey action.

The Eagles were led by Molly Scheid and Morgan Klein, who each had two goals apiece. Brooke Arneson, Maddi O’Connor, Ally Steffensmeier and Afton Hulke also each had a goal for New Ulm.

Jayda Helget added four assists for New Ulm, while Klein had three helpers.

The Eagles outshot Worthington 47-1.

New Ulm (13-6, 10-0) is next schedued for an away game at Hutchinson 3 p.m. Saturday.
