NEW ULM — After scoring a school-record 47 points in a double-overtime loss to Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday, Madison Mathiowetz was double-teamed all game and held to just 5 points against New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday night.
Despite Mathiowetz’s lack of scoring on Thursday, the Knights found several other scoring options on the way to a 68-24 win in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action at Cathedral High School.
“If they want to [double team Mathiowetz], that’s fine, that just means everybody else has to step up, which we saw that tonight,” Knights head coach Bruce Woitas said. “Defensively, we held them to 24 on the game, 5 in the second half, so a lot of good things. Madison understands that concept as well, too, in which when you do get the ball doubled, she found a teammate and passed it, too, so that they could score.”
Sydney Windschitl led the Knights with 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists, while Sophie Portner scored 11 points. Reagan Severson was the third Knight in double digits on Thursday with 10 points, while Megan Ahlness added 9 points and Liz Schwint had 8 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Mathiowetz added six rebounds, three steals and three assists.
The Greyhounds were led by Emily Schommer’s 13 points, while Lily Franta added 5 points.
After a 3 by Windschitl had the Knights up 14-5 early on, the Greyhounds closed the distance to 14-11 after a pair of free throws apiece from Franta and Schommer and a jumper near the baseline by Sarah Mohr.
The Knights got a 10-0 run after that to lead 24-11, though, getting two buckets from Windschitl to lead the way.
St. Mary’s got a late 3 from Ahlness and a pair of free throws from Portner to lead 37-19 at the half.
The Knights opened the second half on a 16-1 run before Schommer hit a 3 for the only Greyhound basket of the second half. Jenna Hotovec added the other second-half points for Cathedral earlier on a pair of free throws.
After the tough home loss to MVL on Monday night, the win on Thursday was big for the Knights in getting some confidence back and getting new scorers on the board.
“This is just a credit to our team,” Woitas said. “The other night we lost in double overtime, had our chances to win, we didn’t, our kids took it pretty hard, but they bounced back tonight and we got a solid win.”
St. Mary’s (8-1, 5-1) hosts Red Rock Central on Thursday night, while Cathedral (2-6, 1-4) takes on Cleveland on Dec. 27 at the Nicollet Holiday Tournament.
