NEW ULM — New Ulm Area wrestling junior Cole Ranweiler and senior Colby Wenninger both went 3-0 on Thursday, leading the Eagles to a 2-1 finish in their home-opening quadrangular at New Ulm High School on Thursday.

Ranweiler went 3-0 this past Tuesday in quadrangular action at St. Clair, with all three wins coming by fall. He continued that same aggressive approach on Thursday, picking up all three wins by pin to move to 6-0 on the year.

Wenninger got a win by forfeit and two pins on Thursday for New Ulm.

The Eagles started the evening with a 53-30 win over Sibley East before falling to Marshall/Lakeview/Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 56-21 and then topping Mankato West 46-28 to end the night.

Against Sibley East, NUA eighth-grader Parker Kamm picked up a dominant 15-0 technical fall over freshman Logan Steele in 106-pound action. The Eagles went up 11-0 after 113-pound eighth-grader Logan Lee pinned Dalton Moos in 1:13.

At 120, NUA’s Isaiah Rieser, coming off of a 2-1 day at the St. Clair quad on Tuesday, had his hands full with last season’s state Class A second-place medalist at 113 pounds in Derek Steele. Steele secured an early takedown and scored a pin at 1:10 to put Sibley East on the board and down 11-6.

NUA seventh-grader Wyatt Pollard then picked up a fall in 1:36 to put NUA ahead 17-6 before Sibley East’s Riley Drexler scored a pin at 132 in 1:32. At 138, Jackson Bode got a pin in 2:56 to put NUA up 23-12 before Sibley East’s Logan Carpenter picked up his 150th career win by pinning Ryan Wiltscheck in 1:09 at 145.

Sibley East then grabbed a pair of forfeit wins at 152 and 160 before Ranweiler quickly picked up a pin in 39 seconds at 170 over Jasem Al Sattam to have NUA down 30-29. John Mehlhop (182) and Caleb Arndt (195) then each got a pin for NUA before the Eagles got a pair of forfeit wins of their own to close out the dual with Sibley East victorious.

In NUA’s second dual of the night, while Kamm started the Eagles off on the right foot with a 6-2 decision win over Marshall’s Brett Regnier, the Tigers put 44 consecutive points on the board to lead 44-3, led by four pins. Ranweiler was able to snap that string of losses for the Eagles with another pin, this time in 1:17 against Ilija Milanovic.

After the Eagles dropped back-to-back matches at 182 and 195, NUA’s Julian Hernandez got his second forfeit victory of the night at 220. NUA senior Colby Wenninger then pinned Jackson Vierstraete in 52 seconds at heavyweight to end the dual.

Against West, with the Eagles leading 34-28 late, New Ulm needed at least one more win to seal the night with another team win. At 220, Hernandez finally got to be active on the mat after his two forfeit wins earlier. Hernandez used the early rest to his advantage and picked up a big win by fall late over Trenton Fontaine in the first period at 1:46 to close the door on West’s comeback.

Wenninger then pinned Matthew Pipes in 49 seconds to close the night out.
