Cathedral outlasts Springfield in 5 sets

NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral downed Springfield 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 18-25, 15-13 on Tuesday in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

Both teams kept things close for roughly the first one-quarter of the fifth set.

Springfield tied it at 5-5 on a Cathedral unforced error. A Springfield player knocked the ball out of bounds which gave Cathedral a lead that it would not relinquish.

The Greyhound defense took advantage of Springfield errors and build a 12-6 lead on a 7-1 run. Sydnee Helget got a key block at the net which earned Cathedral a 14-7 advantage.

Springfield attempted a comeback by getting two blocks and earning points on Greyhound miscues. A Cathedral played knocked the ball out of bounds making it 14-13. Cathedral got a block at the net for the set point and the match victory.

“We played hard tonight, but we came up short,” Springfield head coach Tiffany Pierson said. ” She credited Cathedral with playing hard and rallying when it needed to.

The fourth set was a different story because Springfield led the entire set. The Tigers made the plays necessary to earn points and keep Cathedral at bay. A Greyhound mistake gave Springfield the point and the set.

Cathedral had to play from behind in the third set. An ace serve by Maggie Fliszar regained the lead for the Greyhounds to win the set.

Springfield jumped out to a 8-0 advantage in the second set. Cathedral battled back and closed the gap to 24-22. The Tigers managed to hang on and earn the set the point.

Cathedral led the entire first set. Springfield remained persistent making the score 24-22 on a kill by a defender. A Springfield hitting error into the net gave Cathedral the set.

“We are still working on how to win,” Cathedral head coach Becky Wilfahrt said. “We had some people step in and fill spots where needed.”

Eva Mark led Springfield with 37 set assists and two kills. Kora Wahl added 12 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Cylee Graff had 21 kills and six digs while Courtney Wendt contributed 15 digs with six kills.

Emily Schommer led Cathedral with 40 set assists, Fliszar had 17 kills and 16 digs, Megan Haala added 16 digs and seven kills. Sierra Wilson and Sydnee Helget each added 13 digs while Lily Brennan had 15 digs.

Springfield (8-11, 1-4) will host Cedar Mountain on Thursday. Cathedral (11-9, 3-2) will travel to play Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Thursday.
