MLA/C eliminates St. Mary’s

NORTH MANKATO — No. 4 Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey upset No. 2 seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 12-9 on Tuesday in the Section 2A softball Tournament.

MLA/C will now face top-seeded New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday for the right to go to the Class A state tournament and the Wolverines need to beat the Greyhounds twice in order to do so.

The Wolverines scored four runs in the top of the first inning, five more runs in the second inning and three runs in the sixth inning.

St. Mary’s tried to stage a comeback in the seventh inning. Alexa Owens hit a single to left field and scored on a Madesen Roberts double to the left field fence to close the gap to 12-6. Roberts scored on Madison Mathiowetz hit, making it 12-7. Gabby Helget singled, and Sydney Windschitl came in as a courtesy runner. She scored on a wild pitch.

Mathiowetz later scored Kya Krzmarzick’s hit scored Mathiowetz for the Knights’ final run. Sara Zinniel tried to reach base on a bunt, but the ball was fielded by an infielder who threw it to first to end the threat and win the game for MLA/C.

St. Mary’s scored three runs of its own in the bottom of the first inning. Zinniel singled and she scored later on an Owens’ bunt. Lauren Hoffmann reached base on a bunt. She scored on a Cassie Heinrichs single for a 4-2 MLA/C lead. Heinrichs singled and Reagan Severson entered as a courtesy runner. Severson scored when the MLA/C catcher tried to throw out a runner at second base, making it 4-3 after one inning.

In the sixth inning, Emily Stevens’ double, moved the second on an out and she scored on Helget’s double. Windschitl entered as a courtesy runner and she scored on an error for a 12-5 Wolverine advantage.
