New Ulm shuts down Alexandria

NEW ULM — Hunter Johnson scored two goals and Michael Savelkoul and James Spaargren each added two assists as the New Ulm Steel topped Alexandria 6-2 Saturday night in a NA3HL game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Steel goalie Henry Baribeau stopped 36 of 38 Blizzard shots in the game.

Jordan Cooper, Corey Stormer, Spaargren and Jacob Halvorson each added goals for New Ulm (2-2-0).

Jack Parks, Carson Sandwick, Jarrett Cammarata, Brian Oare, Deniss Berdniks, Sam Ayd and Oliver Hoeschen each added a helper.

Alexandria goalie Bailey Rosch stopped 29 of 35 Steel shots.

New Ulm got on the board at the 9:22 mark of the first period when Cooper beat Rosch for a power play goal.

The Steel made it 2-0 at 3:59 of the second period when Spaargren scored a shorthanded goal and then upped the lead to 3-0 three minutes later on Johnson’s first goal.

The Blizzard cut the Steel lead to 3-1 in the third period on a power play goal from Tanner Frerichs.

Two minutes later, the Steel had their three-goal lead back when Halvorson scored on a Steel power play.

Johnson’s second goal upped the lead to 5-1 before the Blizzard’s Riley Scanlon and Stormer exchanged goals.

The Steel host Alexandria agan next Friday before going to Alexandria on Saturday.
