SPRINGFIELD — Three weeks into the season, Decker Scheffler and the rest of the Springfield offense is starting to come together.

Scheffler threw for four touchdowns and ran for another as Springfield picked up its first win of the season with a 35-21 Southwest District win over Adrian on Friday.

Scheffler had three scoring strikes to Isaac Fink and another to Jacob Kieper. Kieper also had an interception late in the game to seal it for the Tigers.

Scheffler also ran in a 3-yard score for the Tigers.

Scheffler and Fink connected on a pair of 3-yard lobs for touchdowns in the first half and the Tigers led 14-7 at halftime as Adrian scored late in the first half. Scheffler was able to connect with his 6-4 receiver, who created mismatches all game.

“That’s nice because there’s not going to be a 6-4 cornerback on Isaac,” Scheffler said. “Teams know that, so they’re going to try to put a cornerback on him and put a safety behind him, which opens up for our other athletes which we have in Jordan [Kieper], Nolan [Hovland], Jake [Rosenstengel] and Ivan [Hovland] and all those guys.”

Scheffler and Fink scored on Springfield’s first drive of the game and the two connected again in the second quarter to make it 14-0 after Fink caught the 2-point conversion.

Fink finished with seven catches for 113 yards.

The Dragons scored just before halftime, but the second half belonged to the Tigers.

Scheffler took matters into his own hands and scored on a 3-yard run with 7:46 left in the third quarter. Adrian’s Brandon Schnoor scored on a 66-yard run following an interception, but Scheffler found Fink for a 22-yard touchdown with 2:14 left for a 28-14 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Scheffler later found Kieper on a slant pass from 5- yards out to make it 35-14 and Adrian scored late in the game for the final margin.

Scheffler said he’s liking the new offense. He threw for 246 yards

“It’s a really fun offense, I like it,” Scheffler said. “It wouldn’t be possible without my offensive linemen, who give me plenty of time and my wide receivers making great plays for me.”
