Schommer no-hits Knights

New Ulm Cathedral pitcher Mark Schommer tosses a pitch against Wabasso on May 5, 2018 at Mueller Park in New Ulm.

NEW ULM — Mark Schommer fired a five-inning no-hitter against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s to lead New Ulm Cathedral to a key 10-0 victory in Tomahawk Conference baseball on Thursday.

The Greyhounds (7-3) also picked up a 12-0 nonconference win over the Knights in a five-inning second game of doubleheader action.

Schommer fanned 11 in Game 1 and allowed no walks. Despite not allowing any hits, walks or runs, Schommer still felt that he could have controlled the zone a little better yet.

“My fastball today [was working].” Schommer said. “I didn’t have as much control as I would have liked, but it seemed to be working. That’s normally my best pitch, so when it’s working, we normally stay with it.”

The Cathedral bats woke up in the middle innings of Game 1 to help Schommer as the Greyhounds added three hits in the third inning and four hits in the fourth for a total of six runs. Cathedral first added a pair of runs in the second inning, scoring on a throwing error by St. Mary’s (3-7) pitcher Dallas Bauer and a wild pitch.

The Greyhounds added another run the next inning on three, two-out singles by Aaron Portner, Sam Knowles and Tony Geiger, with Geiger’s single bringing home Portner. The fourth inning saw Cathedral add another five runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Knowles, who was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and a run scored in Game 1.

After Alex Hillesheim drove in a run on a bases-loaded fielders choice, Knowles ended things early on a base hit that scored Josh Seidl.

Bauer got the loss for St. Mary’s in Game 1, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and three walks. He struck out two batters.

Will Schabert also added a hit and scored a run for Cathedral in the first game, while Nate Hauser and Seidl scored a pair of runs each and Portner added two hits.

“I think we played really well,” Schommer said after Game 1. “We hit the ball pretty well. Eight hits, 10 runs, that’s pretty good. Our defense was solid, we looked comfortable at the plate, and it was nice.”

Portner was the winning pitcher for Cathedral in a Game 2 that saw the Greyhounds continue to take it to the Knights with 11 hits while allowing just two hits in return. Schommer led the Greyhounds again in Game 2, this time with his hot bat, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Seidl was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Greyhounds. He also added a triple, while Knowles drove in two runs on a single.

Hillesheim was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored, and Zach Helget was 2 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

For St. Mary’s in Game 2, Nick Labat added a lead-off single the first inning, and Spencer Hoffman added a single in the fifth.

The Greyhounds host BOLD at Mueller Park starting at 5 p.m. Friday, while the Knights are at Mankato Loyola for a 5 p.m. game Friday.
