Fink, Kettner, Hillesheim highlight All-Journal boys team

First team

Isaac Fink, Springfield, jr., G

Fink was the All-Journal Player of the Year in 2017 and he’s a two-time Tomahawk Conference Player of the Year. The junior led the Tigers to a 28-2 record this year and he averaged 26.6 ppg (691 points), 10.2 rpg (265), 5.8 apg (150) and 2.8 spg (72). For his career, Fink has 2,376 points, 865 rebounds, 598 assists and 327 steals. During his time on the roster, the Tigers were 101-17 overall and 59-5 in the Tomahawk Conference.

“Isaac is the best player in Class A basketball and also the hardest worker,” his coach Lance Larson said. “Nobody puts more time in the gym than him.”

Jake Kettner, MVL, jr., G

Kettner averaged 22.4 ppg, 5.5 apg, 7.8 rpg and shot 48 percent from the floor. He also shot 77 percent at the line and 36 percent from 3. Kettner also averaged 3 spg for the defense and was described by MVL coach Craig Morgan as a very hardworking and dedicated young man. Morgan said it was a blessing having Kettner run the offense and that Kettner gains more confidence each year in his leadership and teammates.

Dylan Hillesheim, CM/C, sr., G

Hillesheim was one of the top players in the conference and averaged 20.5 ppg, 4 apg and 7 rpg for the Cougars this season. The three-year starter finished his career with 1,580 points.

Tanner Vogel, Springfield,

sr. G

Vogel was a four-time Tomahawk Conference All-Conference pick and he ended his season with 17 ppg (509), 6.2 rpg (186), 5.2 apg (157) and 1.9 spg (57). The four-year starter led the Tigers to three conference championships, one section championship and one state tournament appearance. During his time on the roster, the Tigers were 101-17 overall and 59-5 in the Tomahawk Conference. He finished his career with 1,832 points, 565 rebounds, 423 assists and 179 steals.

“Tanner has been one of the most consistent players I have coached,” coach Lance Larson said. “He is a player that could always be counted on night in and night out on both ends of the floor. One of the best mid-range shooters in the area.”

Forwards

Connor Foley, New Ulm, sr., F

Foley averaged 19.2 ppg, 9 rpg, 3.3 spg and 3.3 bpg in his final season at New Ulm. He finished his career with 1,359 points, 571 rebounds, 179 steals and 120 blocks and is a three time All-Journal player. He will next play football at Bemidji State University. A true leader that could play every position for the Eagles, Foley’s presence will be missed next season.

Second team

Ean Thomsen, Nicollet, sr., G

Thomsen averaged 24.7 ppg, 4.5 RPG, 2.9 apg and 2.1 spg this season. He finishes his career with 1,268 points and was an all-conference selection this year.

Nicollet coach Chris Hulke said that Thomsen had a unstoppable season for the Raiders offensively. He said Thomsen was good at attacking the rim and finishing through and around contact.

Decker Scheffler, Springfield, so., G

Scheffler had some big games late for the Tigers and averaged 15.6 ppg (469), 7.9 rpg (237), 4 apg (121) and 1.5 apg (44). Scheffler was named all-conference this past year and has been a major part of the last two conference championships along with two sub-section titles and one state appearance. He has helped his team to a two-year record of 57-6 overall and a perfect 32-0 in the conference. For his career, he has 807 points, 432 rebounds, 235 assists and 98 steals.

Riley Hulke, Nicollet, so., G

Hulke averaged 18.5 ppg, 8.4 apg, 4.1 rpg, 3.9 spg, and shot 42 percent from 3 with 100 makes from beyond the arc. Hulke has 1,058 points, 497 assists and 226 made 3-pointers for his career.

Hulke was all-conference in 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Nicollet coach Chris Hulke described Riley Hulke as a true all-around player.

Nathan Hauser,

Cathedral, sr., G

Hauser finished his senior year with 14.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 3.7 apg. He had 1,135 career points, 389 rebounds, 201 assists and a 49.3 percent shooting percentage. He shot 44.8 percent from 3 for his career also (8th all-time on MSHSL history according to records on the website).

He was an all-conference player his junior and senior year. He played a big role as a leader of the Greyhounds and coach Alan Woitas said that Hauser always made his teammates better.

Lewis Pendleton, CM/C, jr. F

Pendleton’s athleticism created mismatches wherever he played on the court. He averaged 15.5 ppg, 7.6 apg and 5 rpg. He was an All-Conference pick in the Tomahawk and the two-year starter has 640 career points and will add to that next year.

Third team

Jon Zinniel, Cathedral, so., F

Zinniel averaged 14.6 ppg, 6 rpg, 3.3 bpg and 2 spg. He has 690 career points, 263 rebounds and a 45.1 percent shooting percentage for his career so far. He made all-conference this season. Cathedral coach Alan Woitas said that Zinniel improves year after year and said that he was a tough matchup on the offensive end and is a good shot-blocker on defense.

Reece Melby, New Ulm, so., F

Melby averaged 13 ppg, 7 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.4 spg and .8 bpg for the Eagles in his sophomore year. Coach Steve Foley said that Melby provided a needed threat from the perimeter and had the ability to get hot and hit almost every shot.

Zach Haala, Sleepy Eye, sr., F

Haala was a two-year starter and he averaged 16 ppg and 9 rpg this past year. He was named to the Tomahawk All-Conference team this past season.

Eli Samuelson, CM/C,

jr., G

Samuelson was always a threat for the Cougars and averaged 12.6 ppg and 5.4 rpg this past year. The two-year starter will get to add to his 910 career points next year.

Alex Hillesheim,

Cathedral, jr., G

Hillesheim averaged 13.2 ppg and led the team in rebounding with 7 rpg. He has 531 career points and 289 rebounds. He was an all-conference honorable mention this year. Cathedral coach Alan Woitas said Hillesheim was a player that would do whatever it took to make the team better.
