UMAC honors 10 MLC soccer players
NEW ULM — Ten MLC soccer players were honored this week by the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.
Five athletes were from the MLC women’s soccer team and they received All-UMAC recognition by the conference on Wednesday. Senior defender Sarah Kell was named First Team All-UMAC. Emily Muir earned Second Team All-UMAC honors, while Lydia Bitter, Erin Feddersen and Morgan Hill each received honorable mention.
Kell earned First Team honors for the first time (she received honorable mention in 2016) after starting all 19 games as a center back for one of the best defenses in the UMAC. Kell and the Knights allowed only 10 goals (three of which were penalty kicks) in UMAC play and shut out seven of the 12 conference opponents on the schedule. Kell also recorded her only collegiate goal this season.
Muir earned Second Team all-conference honors for the second straight season as Kell’s partner in the middle of the MLC defense. The senior’s aggressive, physical play proved a strong complement to Kell the last two seasons. Muir not only helped the Knights defensively, but also contributed three goals and six points on the other end of the field.
Bitter finished a strong debut season tied for the team lead with seven goals and added two assists. The first-year midfielder was second on the team with 47 shots and 24 shots on goal.
Feddersen recorded a 1.28 goals against average (GAA) in her first season in goal for the Knights and held conference opponents to only 0.78 goals per game. She started 16 of the team’s 19 games and recorded three shutouts.
Hill led the Knights with 18 points and tied for the team lead with seven goals (six of which came in UMAC play) and four assists. Hill was among the most efficient offensive players for the Knights, finishing with 22 shots on goal and 33 total shots.
Senior defender Emily Unke was named the MLC recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to one player on each team who best exemplifies sportsmanship during the season.
For MLC men’s soccer, five players earned All-UMAC honors on Tuesday. Nathan Graumann was named First Team All-UMAC, while Joseph Graumann and Elijah Kroll were each named Second Team All-UMAC. Luke Meihack and Ethan Schultz received honorable mention.
Nathan Graumann earned first team honors for the second consecutive season as the team’s left back. He started 18 of the team’s 19 games and was a steady force on both offense and defense, finishing the season with one goal and three assists while also providing strong defense on the outside.
Joseph Graumann led the Knights in goals for the second straight season with eight, and he also led the team in points (18), shots (51) and shots on goal (21). This marks the second straight season the sophomore forward was named Second Team All-UMAC.
Kroll earned honorable mention last season and improved his play at right back on both offense and defense this year. Using his speed and playmaking ability, the senior finished with one goal and two assists.
Meihack had a strong debut season with six goals and 13 total points, finishing second on the team in both categories. He finished with 30 total shots and scored on six of his 13 shots on goal.
Schultz finished his four-year career in the midfield with his first career All-UMAC honor. The senior midfielder finished with one goal and tied for the team lead with three assists.
Senior goalkeeper Caleb King was named the MLC recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to one player on each team who best exemplifies sportsmanship.
