MLC sweeps North Central in volleyball

MINNEAPOLIS — The Martin Luther College volleyball team swept North Central 3-0 in a Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match Tuesday by the scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-20.

The Knights were in control throughout the match, winning a back-and-forth first and set before cruising to wins in the final two to secure the sweep.

Kira Grev led the team with 13 kills and added 10 digs, while Jade St. Germaine hit .455 on the attack on the way to 11 kills.

Taylor Weber recorded a match-high 19 digs, and Hailey Stade led the Knights with 17 assists.

MLC improved to 12-9 overall and 7-3 in UMAC play with the win. NCU fell to 1-16 on the season and 0-9 in conference play in defeat.

The Knights will return to action on Friday, October 6, when they play a one-day tournament at UW-Eau Claire. MLC will start the day with a match against UW-Stevens Point at 5 p.m., followed by a match against UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.

Women’s soccer

MLC 4, North Central 1

MINNEAPOLIS — The Martin Luther College women’s soccer team remained unbeaten in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play thanks to a 4-1 win at North Central on Tuesday.

The two teams were tied 1-1 at the half, with Morgan Hill scoring her fourth goal of the season for the Knights.

MLC took control in the second half, scoring three times while holding the Rams scoreless. Lydia Bitter scored the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 55th minute to give the team a one-goal lead, and Hailey Johnson scored a pair of goals after that to push the final margin to three. Bitter’s goal was her team-leading seventh, while Johnson’s two tallies bumped her season total to three.

Both teams were credited with 10 shots in the game, with MLC holding a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. Johnson led the Knights with five total shots and three shots on goal.

Erin Feddersen stopped four of the five shots she faced in goal for MLC.

MLC improved to 5-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 in UMAC play with the win. NCU fell to 4-6 on the season and 1-5 in league play in defeat.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday when they travel to St. Scholastica.

Men’s soccer

North Central 3, MLC 2

MINNEAPOLIS — The Martin Luther College men’s soccer team was unable to hold a first half lead in a 3-2 loss at North Central on Tuesday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action.

The Knights started fast thanks to a Joseph Graumann goal in the sixth minute to give MLC the 1-0 edge.

MLC had a chance to build on that early lead just one minute later, but Nathan Graumann’s penalty kick attempt went wide and the Knights went to halftime with the 1-0 advantage.

The Rams took over from there, scoring three consecutive goals in the 52nd, 60th and 77th minute to take a 3-1 lead. Luke Meihack scored to cut the deficit to 3-2 in he 78th minute, but the Knights were unable to find the equalizer in he final minutes.

The Knights were outshot 16-13 for the game, with the Rams also holding a 9-8 lead in shots on goal. Meihack led MLC with four total shots. Keeper Caleb King stopped six of nine shots he faced in goal for MLC.

MLC fell to 4-5 overall and 3-1 in UMAC play in defeat. The Rams improved to 3-4-2 on the season and 1-3-2 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action on Saturday when they travel to St. Scholastica.
