Prep sports roundup: Fairmont defeats New Ulm in Big South Conference tennis

Girls’ tennis

Fairmont 4, New Ulm 3

NEW ULM — Fairmont defeated New Ulm in Big South Conference tennis on Thursday.

In singles action, Emma Maudal lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and at No. 2 singles, Sarah Guymon lost 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3 singles Abby Hietala lost 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 4 singles, Makiah Otto lost 6-1, 6-1.

New Ulm swept in doubles competition. At No. 1 doubles, Jane Arnoldt and Abbie Frauenholtz won 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles Breanna Widmer and Shelby Haseman won 6-2, 6-0 and at No. 3 doubles Kaila Brudelie and Bethany Janssen won 6-1, 6-2.

New Ulm plays at Waseca on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Boys’ soccer

Worthington 4, New Ulm 1

WORTHINGTON — Worthington defeated New Ulm on Thursday in a Big South Conference boys’ soccer game.

Jack Howard scored the Eagles’ lone goal with an assist from Matthew Messenger with 3:51 left in the first half.

Matthew Janke had 16 saves in goal.

New Ulm (2-3-3, 2-3-3) will host Fairmont on Monday.

Prep volleyball

GFW 3, Springfield 0

SPRINGFIELD — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Springfield 25-14, 25-14, 25-14 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

For Springfield, Brittany Rogotzke had 14 digs and Anna Plotz added 12 digs. Arynzi Rabb had nine set assists.

Jordan Rettig led GFW with 17 set assists and seven digs. Megan Palmer had 10 kills and Jennifer Woods added eight digs.

GFW (3-5, 1-0) will host BOLD on Tuesday Springfield (0-10, 0-2) will host Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (9-2, 1-0) on Tuesday.

Holy Family Catholic 3, Sibley East 0

ARLINGTON — Holy Family Catholic defeated Sibley East 25-20, 25-15, 30-28 on Thursday in a nonconference volleyball game.

Sibley East was led by Rachel Rettmann who had 12 kills, eight digs and two blocks.

Also for Sibley East, Morgan Sterns had nine kills, nine set assists and one block and Taylor Brinkman had 18 set assists and five digs.

Sibley East plays at the Mankato West tournament at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

CM/C 3, Sleepy Eye 0

SLEEPY EYE — Cedar Mountain/Comfrey defeated Sleepy Eye 25-18, 25-17, 32-30 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Kylie Wersal led CM/C with 28 digs. Also for CM/C, Makenzie Kerhoff had 16 digs and 14 kills, Abby Jemmings had 11 digs, 36 set assists and three kills and Natalie Lux had 12 digs and nine kills.

For Sleepy Eye, Madi Heiderscheidt had 11 kills, 13 digs and three blocks. Madi Krueger had 10 digs and Mariah Miller had five kills.

CM/C plays at the Mankato West tournament on Saturday. Sleepy Eye plays at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Thursday.

St. James 3, New Ulm 2

NEW ULM — St. James defeated New Ulm 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-10 in Big South Conference volleyball on Thursday.

For the Eagles, Nora Windschill had four blocks and Ashlyn Donner had five kills. Olivia Wick had five kills and five blocks and Madeline Gag had six kills and five blocks.

Izzie Wolkow finished with eight set assists and Ellie Bute had nine set assists.
