New Ulm 14U team goes 0-3 at Class 14AAA state tourney

NEW ULM — The New Ulm 14U baseball team went 0-3 in the Minnesota Sports Federation (MSF) Stare Tournament on Saturday at Johnson Park.

New Ulm opened wth a 4-1 loss to Pierz before falling 16-5 to the Minnesota Mixers in a five-inning contest. New Ulm then lost its last game of pool play by a 13-2 score to Farmington in another five-inning game.

New Ulm coach Brady Ranweiler said that there was a recurring theme in all three losses.

“Baseball is a game of outs and in our games there are 21,” he said. “The more outs you give a team, the harder it is to win — it is the same recipe at the high school, Legion or amateur level. And today we did not do enough of the little things to come out with some Ws.”

In the loss to Pierz, New Ulm fell behind 1-0 before tying the game on an Isaiah Muller double and a Hunter Sehr base hit.

But Pierz scored a run in the bottom of the inning and then scored two more runs in the fifth.

Hunter Sehr took the complete-game loss for New Ulm. He allowed six hits and fanned five.

In the game with the Minnesota Mixers, New Um fell behind 6-0 after a half inning. New Ulm scored a run in the bottom of the inning when Ethan Stade singled and eventually scored on a Sehr groundout.

The Mixers added another six run inning for a 12-1 lead. New Ulm scored a run in the home half of the inning when Cole Ranweiler singled, stole second and scored on a Caleb Arndt single.

But the Mixers responded with four more runs in the top of the fifth for a 16-2 lead. New Ulm rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Cole Ranweiler had three hits for New Ulm.

Farmington then closed out the day with a 13-2 win. Farmington used four New Ulm errors in the first inning to score five runs and rollled from there.

Stade doubled for New Ulm.

“In a big stage like this in a state tournament in your hometown, we had kids putting to much pressure on themselves,” Brady Ranweiler said. “It is a learning process but I am proud of the boys on the team, I am a pretty demanding coach and we only have 13 players. I am proud that I could be here with them this weekend. They will look back years from now and say I got to play in a state tournament.”
