Sleepy Eye VFW splits with Edina
SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye VFW Post 800 split a doubleheader with Edina on Friday.
In the first game, Post 800 lost 7-4.
Jace Marotz picked up the loss, while allowing eight hits, three walks and five runs in six innings. He struck out three.
Nick Labat and Marotz led Sleepy Eye with a 2-for-4 day each at the plate. Henry Scheitel and Landon Strong also added two hits apiece for Sleepy Eye.
Sleepy Eye led 4-2 after four innings of play in the first game, led by RBI singles from Strong and Labat.
Edina added three runs on a four-hit fifth inning to lead 5-4. With Sleepy Eye only managing to collect two hits over the final three innings, Edina completed the comeback.
Sleepy Eye outhit Edina 11-9 in the first game, but four errors and six wild pitches helped Edina pull out the win.
In the second game of the day, Post 800 picked up a 16-12 win.
Luke Mielke received the win for Sleepy Eye with four innings of six-hit ball. He allowed four runs with one walk and one strikeout.
Sleepy Eye held a commanding 13-4 lead after the fourth inning was complete, led by a six-run fourth inning. During the inning, Sleepy Eye batted through the lineup and Labat doubled twice with his second double resulting in two RBIs.
Matt Sellner also had a two-run double for Sleepy Eye during the extended inning. The top of the fifth gave the Sleepy Eye fans something to worry about, however, with Edina taking seven runs back in an inning where it too batted through the lineup.
Edina added another run in the sixth inning to cut the score to 13-12, but a bottom of the sixth that featured a three-run double by Scheitel offered extra insurance. After a 1-2-3 inning by Kyle Domeier in the seventh, Post 800 escaped with the win.
Labat was 2 for 3 in Game 2, while Marotz was 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Domeier went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Sellner also went 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
“I would say that right now we have our eyes on where we want to be, but it’s a matter of the three facets of the game,” Post 800 coach Brandon Streich said. “Hitting, pitching and defense. And right now we’re getting two of three or one of three and it’s just a matter of time before all three come together.”
