Beussman had city’s interest at heart

To the editor: New Ulm has lost a city father who truly had our community’s best interest deep in his heart. Among the finest couples to tackle the job of New Ulm Mayor, Bob Beussman and First Lady Cheryl dedicated countless hours over the years to promoting and advocating for the community of New Ulm. Thirty years ago when I was elected to represent the First Ward on the City Council my first constituent call came from a Bob Beussman. He was not happy that speeding snowplows continuously shot snow over the boulevard and on to the sidewalks of his corner lot. I pled his case to the ...

In response to ‘Questions for school superintendent candidates’

To the editor: An excellent education is extremely important, and ideally provided by parents, teachers and life experiences. Formal “education” is the responsibility of public, and private schools. Public schools, funded by public monies, are tasked with providing ALL students, regardless of ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, etc. with a comprehensive education. The superintendent oversees that. Private schools, funded by specific entities, are able to provide narrower perspectives. As a mother, grandmother and former school board member, I feel important questions for ...

More harm than some think?

To the editor: “No one is owed an apology for mask mandates,” a column by Georgia Garvey in the Feb. 28, 2023, Journal, contains these statements: “No adult was harmed by having to wear a face mask, and the questionable impact on children’s development was balanced by a very understandable desire to prevent the deaths of millions of people.” Something on how the figure of “millions” is brandished can be found in “What can we learn from the biggest lies people believed about COVID?” by Brandon Smith. A Brown University study showed a drop of over 20 points in the ...

America in a demise state

To the editor: It only takes three generations to destroy the foundation and fabric of a country where all the memories and history are erased and lost forever. America is now on a fast-track to be dismantled forever of Godly faith, family and freedoms, all of which built this great nation unlike any other ever created over thousands of years. Attack and divide the family, destroy true marriage of a man/woman, destroy babies by abortion murder, attack the innocent minds of school children for them to learn and obey social ills (not the 3 R’s), and all of America crumbles at its ...

Questions for the superintendent

To the editor: I read with interest the article on March 2 about the school board interviewing for a new District 88 superintendent. Here in Minnesota it was just reported that 19 elementary and high schools did not have one student test proficient in 2022 on a math standardized test. At the start of the 2022 school year, fewer than half of Minnesota students statewide are proficient in math (44.6%) and just under 50% can’t read at grade level. We don’t want New Ulm to be in those negative numbers. We need leaders from the superintendent on down to be concerned about teaching the ...

Invasive Species Awareness Week

To the editor: Why should we care that this week, Feb. 20-26, is National Invasive Species Awareness Week? The big reason is money. Invasive species cost money. The big one for our area will be the loss of our beautiful ash trees. There are omninous signs — increased woodpecker activity and the loss of bark. Once the bark is gone you can see all the burrowing that has been done by the larval stage of the Emerald Ash Borer Beetle. Another sign of impending doom is the fact that many cities are changing their management plans — trees are dying so quickly and in such large numbers ...
