In response to ‘Questions for school superintendent candidates’

To the editor:

An excellent education is extremely important, and ideally provided by parents, teachers and life experiences. Formal “education” is the responsibility of public, and private schools. Public schools, funded by public monies, are tasked with providing ALL students, regardless of ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, etc. with a comprehensive education. The superintendent oversees that. Private schools, funded by specific entities, are able to provide narrower perspectives.

As a mother, grandmother and former school board member, I feel important questions for potential candidates for the New Ulm School Superintendent are:

1. How will you support our teachers, at all levels?

2. Do you expect our graduates to have a strong base in match, English and history, with exposure to the arts and foreign languages as well?

3. Will our students become adequately prepared to think for themselves, ask questions and be able to assess situations so they are prepared to function smoothly in our very diverse world?

4. How do you see parents, teachers and the administration working together?

5. Will you accept our children for who they are and encourage all of them to ush, explore, discover, question and grow in their own, unique potential?

Public schools are designed for all children. Parents have the responsibility of explaining and clarifying to their children the differences that may arise between the public education that is addressed to all the children and their familial beliefs and traditions. These parents also may have the alternative of sending their children to a private school
