National shame in White House

To the editor: I would like to put aside the horrific economic policies and fractured international relations of this administration for a moment and concentrate on the current resident of the White House. It seems that many Americans no longer value common human decency so I would like to remind those people of a few facts. I believe that if these people were being totally honest with themselves, they would agree with these simple observations. Donald Trump is the embodiment of everything we would teach our children not to be. Donald Trump is cruel, he is a bully, he is ignorant, ...

Protests for the people

To the editor: For those who are still curious about Saturday’s demonstration on Broadway — the gathering of over 250 area people was a non-partisan protest of many actions taken by the current administration that will hurt us folks in southern Minnesota. Among these issues are broad, ricocheting tariffs that unsettle markets and will increase our cost of everything from groceries to cars, and cuts to services and programs that we depend on, like access to Social Security, threats to Medicare, VA services for veterans, education services for our kids, even our ...

Look at the numbers

To the editor: In a country of just over 340 million people, we live as the wealthiest nation in the world. And from our affluent society — yes, affluent, and not the hellscape or third-world country that 45/47 proclaims to agitate his base — we generate an enormous amount of tax revenue, which our country’s legislators have seen fit to help needy people around the globe. But the supporters of this administration’s “America First” agenda are diametrically opposed to helping anyone but the grifter in the White House, who isn’t really in need of their hard-earned dollars, ...

The Real Hands Off movement

To the editor: The ‘Hands Off’ demonstration on Saturday in New Ulm was not the grassroots organization that they try to portray. Indivisible has been funded by George Soros’s Open Society Foundation to the tune of $7.6 million. I would suggest that the real ‘Hands Off’ movement should be as follows: Hands Off — trying to stop the attempt to root out waste and fraud in Medicaid in Minnesota. Under the leadership of Tim Walz there has been over $68 million in fraud. Hands Off — our tax dollars involved in the Feeding Our Future fraud under the direction of the ...

Fischbach urged to support funding for Alzheimer’s research

To the editor: This past September, I lost my mother to Alzheimer’s disease. It was a heart-wrenching experience that I know far too many families across Minnesota and the country are familiar with. Alzheimer’s is a relentless, degenerative disease that affects not only those who are diagnosed but also their families and loved ones. As I reflect on the painful journey my family went through, I am reminded of the crucial need for further research into this devastating disease. I am writing to urge Rep. Michelle Fischbach, who represents Minnesota’s District 7, to support robust ...

This is what democracy looks like

To the editor:  I sense a change is coming to New Ulm after spending an hour at the intersection of Broadway and Center on Saturday afternoon. I saw something that felt new in our lovely town. Each of the four corners of the intersection had dozens of people who wanted to make a difference. The organizers said that around 250 people were there. I saw a few people I knew but I saw many I did not know but everyone had a common cause for that hour. Some said that it was cold and the wind made them feel colder but they proudly held their ground. What made me really feel hopeful was ...
