How’s your conscience?

To the editor: We’re in the middle of the war on illegal opioids. Hundreds of tons of opioids have been confiscated or blown up along with narco terrorists thanks to Coast Guard and especially the Navy. The amount of fentanyl exposer needed to kill someone is so small. So, think before you grab that doorknob, shopping cart, or getting in a car. A thirteen-year-old from Moorhead was caught with over 1,000 pills laced with fentanyl. Anyone outraged by this? President Trump’s choice of words have offended folks but I’m here to remind you a few things. President Biden used ...

Marlys Zetah sends out call to action

A person facing a terminal diagnosis could feel powerless. Marlys Zetah, a much-loved member of our community, has, from her death bed, sent out a powerful call to action. She is speaking out to protect children from the violence of misused guns and assault weapons. Marlys, a retired nurse, mother of four, grandmother of nine, eager participant in church and community, and much-admired friend felt compelled to use her remaining days and hours to work for a just and safe governmental policy on guns. In November of 2024, Marlys learned that her cancer had returned and been ...

The ‘worst of the worst’?

The one thing for which the current occupant of what’s left of the White House still has decent polling numbers is his securing of our southern border. Congratulations, sir. You actually followed through with a campaign promise. Unfortunately, his White Supremacist lust for power has evolved into the actions of the ICE goons going after the “worst of the worst.” Fortunately, public outcry and opinion has swung in the other direction while DHS director Kristi Noem has gone off the rails and appears to revel in her henchmen’s gang-tackling of people who look as if they’re here ...

Words matter

To the editor: On Nov. 28, President Trump ripped on Gov. (Tim) Walz on “Truth” Social calling him “seriously retarded.” He accused Walz of “allowing an influx of Somali migrants to take over his “once great state.” describing Somalia as a “hellhole” country that is “filthy, dirty, disgusting and ridden with crime.” Trump claimed “Somalian gangs are roving Minneapolis streets while Minnesotans stay locked in their apartments and houses” Statements quickly proven false and deemed racist. That Trump chose to mock the most vulnerable people in our society ...

No longer welcome and less free

To the editor: Reading what Speaker Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House, said this morning about this year’s National Defense Authorization Act made me cringe…and wonder what is happening to our country. I believe we should be diligent in the battle against drugs; but, I don’t think that means becoming a ‘police state’.  Control should be done, civilly, at our borders and ports of entry… not by invading, or threatening to invade other countries. Prohibiting diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the Defense Department keeps intelligent, innovative, exceptional ...

Support the Ivy House

To the editor: “What can I do?” is a common response to the increasing violence we have seen in both our state and nation recently. Like many, I have been reflecting and praying on how to be a positive force for change. As a famous quote suggests, the only way to save the world is one person at a time.  Thankfully, we live in a community that is built on caring for our neighbors.  As a board member of Ivy House, I’d like to share how this organization cares for others. Ivy House’s mission statement is, “Sharing God’s love with families by providing a safe and caring ...
