District 16B race not set yet

To the editor:

I would like to clarify something that was stated in a recent article. It has not been established yet that Paul Torkelson and Mindy Kimmel will face each other in the November election.

Currently, Minnesota’s major parties are conducting local and state conventions. One item of business is to endorse candidates for such offices as state senator, state representative, US Senator, and US Representative. As was stated in the article, Ms. Kimmel was endorsed by the Senate District 16 DFL. I’m not sure if she had an opponent or not, but her name will be on the primary ballot on August 11. Voters who choose a DFL ballot in the primaries will be voting on who will represent the DFL in the November election (even if there’s just one candidate).

Meanwhile, there are at least two Republicans vying for the 16B GOP endorsement: Rep. Torkelson and Tammy Houle of Redwood Falls. The Senate District 16 Republican convention is scheduled for Monday, May 18. As part of this convention, delegates will vote on whether to endorse Torkelson, Houle, or someone else for 16B.

No matter what the result of that vote is, anyone can choose to file for the August primary. Voters who chose a GOP ballot at the primary will select the Republican nominee for the November election.
