Thumbs Up/Down

Springfield at State

THUMBS UP: The Springfield High School boys basketball team earned their trip to the MSHSL Class A Boys Basketball tournament last week, and was listed as the top seed.

The Tigers, fell, however, to Spring Grove in an opening round upset. They beat Christ’s Household of Faith on Friday in the consolation round and will be playing for fifth place today.

We know the Tigers had been shooting for higher honors, but today’s game will be the end of an outstanding season for the Springfield team. Congratulations to the Tigers, and here’s hoping you go out with a win today.

Ready for the flood

SIDEWAYS THUMB: The heavy snows of February and early March have been quickly melting away, bringing the flood season to Minnesota in earnest. Thanks to the levee New Ulm built to keep the Minnesota River in check the flooding along Front Street and Valley Street such as we saw in 1987 won’t be coming back, but there is still plenty of water on the Cottonwood River. The city is prepared with sandbags and homeowners should be keeping a wary eye on the river, which is expected to rise another foot and a half by Tuesday before it begins to fall back.

Let’s be ready for the flood waters, and please, don’t drive on flooded roads.
