Brown County Browser: Brown County needs foster care homes

Brown County Human Services is in need of foster homes like never before. In the past years Brown County was challenged with placing 30 children in 20 available foster care homes. The number of foster children needing placement in Brown County has increased to 40 children and the number of non-relative foster care homes has decreased to 14.

Brown County also incorporates the help and assistance from relative families of the children but this is not always possible. More children are being placed in foster care than ever before and a shortage of foster parents means there are more children than homes to place them in. Part of the reason for the increase is due to an increase in drug abuse with Meth addiction topping the list. Meth addiction treatment can take months; it leaves the children in need of temporary homes.

Foster homes provide temporary care for children who are unable to remain in their own homes. The foster home helps the child cope with the separation from his or her parents, providing safety in a nurturing environment and helps develop a plan for the future of the child. The primary benefit foster parents can experience is the joy of providing a child with a home and watching them grow. Parents also receive a subsidy for children placed in their home.
