Eagle Update: Working to make a good school better

What makes a great school? As you read the three-part story related to assessments, you understand there are many factors that go into what makes a great school. Climate, student achievement, opportunities based on student interest, safety, connections in school, strong community support and strong parent-school relationships are the major factors most parents look at.

As a school, our goals are: 1) to increase student growth in assessments by 10 percent over two years; 2) establish student support programs for all types of learners; 3) enhance positive school spirit, sense of pride and belonging with staff, parents and the community. These goals are focused on helping all students grow academically, socially and emotionally. The goals also support what makes a great school.

We are reviewing our vocational programs to make sure what we offer is aligned to our workforce and career pathways. Our vocational staff will be meeting with their advisory council in November to share what we are doing and to get feedback, allowing us to adjust for the future.

When I meet with business and industry leaders, they continue to tell me that students need basic soft skills in order to be successful in any job. They can teach employees the technical skills necessary for their organization. Soft skills include: the ability to communicate (both written and oral), show up to work consistently and on time, ability to work with others, contribute to the organization and look to become better at their job. We do work with the student on the soft skills and how that translates to the work site.

The new high school facilities are a good economic benefit for New Ulm. We are very fortunate to host several post-season football games at the high school stadium. We have hosted a section final game and will host three state quarterfinal games this weekend. We have hosted sub-section volleyball games and will be hosting sub-section basketball games this year. Hosting these events brings in thousands of visitors to New Ulm.
