Eagle Update: Snow days
Winter officially started on Dec. 21, but it seems like it has been winter for quite some time. With the snow, cold and winds we have experienced lately, winter isn’t going anywhere soon.
From a school standpoint, we make weather related decisions based on many factors – not just predicted weather. We consider many of the following each time there is questionable weather approaching: checking current road conditions, observing how much snow covers the ditches, checking the wind chill, knowing the amount of daylight for student pick-up, and checking air speeds in our region. We drive the roads our buses take early in the morning and throughout the day when weather is a concern.
While many appreciate snow days, after so many, we look at how we make up missed instructional days. Our calendar does have the order of make-up instructional days should we need to go that route.
The first semester for high school students will conclude on Jan. 12. With a few days for professional development, second semester will begin on Jan. 17. This means we are quickly approaching the midpoint of our school year. January is typically the time we are reviewing student scores to measure growth since the fall, making adjustments to instruction based on individual student needs and putting plans in place for the state spring assessments. We also spend time reviewing our programs to make recommendations for changes for the next school year.
The school board received the annual district audit at a special board meeting on December 22nd. The audit was clean, meaning no findings or issues with fiscal accounting practices. We have a great team in our business office, ensuring that all fiscal laws and district policies are followed. We are pleased to maintain a positive fund balance, providing stability and flexibility should there be any future changes in the local, state or federal economy.
By policy, we are required to maintain at least 45 days of operating expenses in our fund balance. Through proper fiscal management – while supporting our students to meet their needs – we are well above the minimum number of days required.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
Go Eagles!
