Eagle Update: Activities program

The New Ulm Public Schools Activities Department staff, advisors, and coaches would like to welcome you to the 2019-2020 School Year. We are fortunate our district offers many opportunities for students to get involved and find ways to connect with their peers and teachers, through fine arts and athletic activities. Whether it’s the Fall Musical, basketball, FFA, speech team, or robotics, we want our students to be involved in something. Finally, as a friendly reminder, there are four primary jobs at each athletic event: officiate, coach, play, or spectate. We can only choose one!

Many people are aware of the vast opportunities afforded students at New Ulm High School, but many may not be aware of all the programs available to students at our Middle School. In the Middle School, students are offered a variety of opportunities to participate and excel. Many of our programs are intended for all students in grades 5-8, as we believe that fostering whole-child learning is imperative at this age. After-school clubs are offered each trimester in order to appeal to a wider range of students. This fall, Battle of the Books, Cross Country Club, Ultimate Frisbee Club, Magic: The Gathering, and Volleyball Club are among choices students can participate in. Each trimester, new clubs are offered. Our staff do an amazing job of coming up with clubs and activities that students are interested in. This helps maintain student interest throughout the year, and it allows students different choices as they learn more about what their passions are.

Middle School students also have the opportunity to participate in Pops Choir, Jazz Band, Student Council and School Patrol – of which students may apply to join. We also have a record number of students participating in sports in 7th and 8th grade this year. New Ulm Middle School prides itself on offering opportunities for all students throughout the year.

As the school year kicks off, we are looking forward to seeing old and new faces join different clubs and activities. If you have ideas for after-school clubs and are interested in leading one for our 5-8 grade population in New Ulm, please contact Rachel Sandquist at 507-233-6100.
