David Wilhelm Melquist

David Wilhelm Melquist (1/18/1946- 5/27/2023) age 77 of New Ulm, MN passed away on Saturday, May 27 atAbbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

A graveside service will be held at the Lafayette First Lutheran Church Cemetery on Wednesday, June 28 at 2 pm. There will be pie and coffee at the Lafayette Community Center to follow.

David was born to Albin Frank and Martha Bernice (Nelson) Melquist at Union Hospital in New Ulm. As a child, he grew up in Lafayette and attended Lafayette Elementary school then grades 7-12 in New Ulm. In 1964, he graduated from New Ulm High School. Dave worked at Severin Radio & TV in Gaylord for six years. Then became a proud employee at Martin Luther College working 36 years as a custodian until his retirement. Dave had 4 passions in his life; Christ, music, motorcycles, and dogs. As a child he went to the Lafayette Lutheran Church where he learned a love for Christ and he did Bible studies with regularity throughout his adult life. Dave enjoyed music and played Bass guitar for Blackie & the Blueboys, then Dee St. James & the Country D-J’s, also Terrence Joel’s Express (Terry Richter’s Band). He Enjoyed motorcycles, especially Harley Davidsons. He often would talk about his short trips with small groups and his trips to the Sturgis motorcycle Rally for 12 years. He had a special love for his dogs, it has been said that David’s dogs were the best taken care of in the state.

Dave came from a small family and survivors include a niece, Annica (Mike) Hornick of Volga, SD; great nephews, Joe Hornick and Chris Hornick, sister-in-law Alvina Melquist, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Arvid, and Vernon.
