Lorraine Wels

NEW ULM — Lorraine Wels, age 96 of New Ulm died peacefully on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at the Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye.

A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-South Chapel in New Ulm.

Visitation will be from 2-4 pm on Sunday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home-South Chapel.

A private committal service took place in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm.

Lorraine is survived by her son, Brian (Diana) Wels of Ames, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Lynne Dewey of Boston, MA; and her nieces and nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ruben Wels in 1974; her son, Bruce Wels in 2001; and her brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Dorothy Windland.

Lorraine Theresa Windland was born April 18, 1925, in New Ulm to Alfred and Hertha (Huhn) Windland. She was a 1943 graduate from New Ulm High School and later attained a degree in social work from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1947. Early in her career, Lorraine worked as a social worker in St. Paul and Minneapolis. She was united in marriage to Ruben Wels on November 27, 1953, in New Ulm. This union bless the couple with two sons whom together they raised in Fargo, North Dakota. The couple later moved the family to New Ulm in 1966 where Lorraine eventually went back to work as a social worker for Brown County Family Services until her retirement in 1989. In her retirement, Lorraine volunteered at the Harkin Store, the Brown County Historical Society, as well as the Treasure Haus in New Ulm. Besides her work, Lorraine also loved working with her hands in her gardens, knitting, needlepointing, and baking in the kitchen. She was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm. Blessed be her memory.
