Lyla (Jaus) Baur was born August 8th, 1930 in New Ulm, MN to Martin and Hannah (Lieske) Jaus. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Moltke Twp where she also attended school. She continued her Christian education in the High School dept. of DMLC, as well as the College. She taught at Bethesda Lutheran School in Milwaukee, WI and Zion Lutheran School in Monroe, MI.

Pastor Ralph N. Baur and Lyla were married at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Moltke Twp. on June 19th, 1951, while he was serving congregations in Broken Bow and Merna, NE. Four years later, her husband accepted a Call to a mission congregation in Edmonds, Washington where they resided until retirement in 1988.

The Lord blessed them with seven children. Raising a family and being a homemaker was “the best thing I ever did,” she said. She also taught intermittently at Salem Lutheran School, and was involved in various facets of the churches her husband served. She worked in the travel field and for a catering company both based in Seattle. After her husband’s retirement in 1988, they moved back to their roots in New Ulm, MN to be closer to family. In retirement her husband served the congregations in Fairmont, Courtland, and Brighton Twp. until 2002. She treasured the Christian fellowship that came along with serving these congregations. Lyla was thankful for the long lasting friendships even after the death of her husband. Hospitality was her gift. Countless people have gathered around her table enjoying her baking, hosting, and elegant table settings throughout the years. Lyla was passionate about her Lord, her family, Christian Education, and her country.
